disagree. kane/toews won a cup during the elc years. same with malkin. not saying that it will happen with us, but this season is fail if we miss the playoffs imo.
sosh, kap, gauthier and bibeau. nothing performance wise from last year that can't easily be replaced. - Tumbleweed
Agreed.
Signing old man Marleau to that 3 year contract is proof they want another run in the playoffs.
Not making it would be a failure.
Yes I know its only year 2.5
Yes I know they were extremely healthy last year
Yes I know the kids are still developing.
But there might be only one rookie in the lineup this year and alot more vets.
Playoffs are Lou's and babs goal. |

All those guys, including Lu, will go on LTIR just like Hossa did. - LeftCoaster
Not so sure about that. There is still a ruling coming about whether Hossa will be eligible to go on LTIR. If NHL rules against Chicago - they will be feeling like the little nerdy accountant in Bobo's prison cell. Chicago spent alot of cap money based entirely on Hossa's eligibility being accepted - but it's not official, and the NHL was really pissed at those 12 year (circumvent the cap) deals. Might just be a boot to the head coming up for the Hawks. |

How can you say that one year after finishing last overall. They will be developing for the next several years.
They are allowed to win while they are still developing. - bixll
They finished last overall, but the next season they had a highly unusual amount of NHL ready elite prospects all put into the lineup at the same time. And the development had been happening previously, with Rielly, Kadri, Gardiner, you could say JVR as well. I've never gone along with the idea that the rebuild just started when Shanahan arrived.
I get your point though, their young guns will still be developing, it's just they started at such a high level I don't see it as a team that's still on the bubble. I think we agree though basically, they can be one of the more competitive teams and still be developing. |

Like I said.
It wouldn't surprise me to see this team come out of the east. - the_eye
Yeah, that'll get called summer talk, but I tend to think why not? They were only a few points back of the Capitals over the second half, stopped blowing leads down the stretch, and then looked totally legit in the playoffs against an experienced top seed. Why can't they be competing for the Cup now?
If they get gored by injuries, like say if Matthews, Freddy, and Rielly all blow out their knees, they could in trouble but that goes for any team.

I don't think there is a hope in hell he takes that after signing away the majority of his earning years to a low price deal. This is his pay day. - AdamFrench
Agreed
I have a JVR jersey and he's been a faveorite of mine for all those poopty years we had.
But in the end we don't need him. We have guys like Kapanen, Grundstrom etc who can replace him...may or not replace his 30 goals. But with the Leafs firepower a 50 point player would be fine.
Now....if he wants to be a Leaf bad and signs for 5-5.5 million then you have to do it. I doubt that's the case if they already tried to trade him |
