I'm not even sure what the equivalent would be in today's game to 88.
Because of his physicality, maybe Ovie? But Ovie isn't the playmaker that Eric was in his prime. Eric had the passing ability the league in assists and was an elite faceoff guy.
Because of his size and hands, maybe Malkin is a better comparison? But even in that comparison, Malkin isn't nearly as physical as Eric was. Early career Eric would put dudes into the 3rd row with a check just because he could. - johndewar
Getzlaf is probably the closest. Benn would be similar as well, but doesn't have the mean streak of Getzlaf. |

Oh, yes, he does. Benn is nasty to play against, just less of a yapper. |

Granted, I haven't seen him play for than a handful of times. But I still think that Getzlaf would be the closest there is in today's game. |

Getzlaf is half the player 88 was. I don't mean to denigrate him, that is a compliment, Eric was that good. |

Getzlaf, as a big RH shot, FO guy, playmaker is a real good comparable. |

That's why I said closest. He's similar, but not quite as good. |

Wasn't taking a shot at your estimate, just proclaiming my man crush on mid 90s Eric Lindros. |

Oh, absolutely. I don't think there's anyone in the game who can do what he did. The game has just changed, also. When he played, there had never been the combination of size and skill that he had, and he was able to take over long stretches of game in a variety of ways. A comparable today would be a more fit Dustin Byfuglien's body with Crosby's skills. |

I think he was more skilled than crosby, but that's about as close as you can get. |

Different types of games. They're both skilled similarly, but Lindros used his pure brute strength to enhance his skills, where as Crosby uses his pacifier shiftiness. |

As much as I dislike crosby without his antics he really is a Lindros lite. |

I was talking with my friends a few months back. Talking top-10 players in NHL history.
#'s 1-3 are Gretzky, Lemieux, and Orr, and you can make arguments for each of them to be #1.
#4 was Gordie Howe, partially based on his legend/icon status.
#5 is, probably, Jagr. Just look at his numbers compared to the games he missed (2 lockouts plus 3 KHL seasons).
After that, I think you have to put Crosby at #6. Whether you like him or not, it's hard to argue the numbers.
7-10 had a few different players. Lindros (health concerns), Ovechkin, Bossy, LaFleur, Fedorov, Lidstrom all got mentioned. |

Thoughts are with all about to face the wrath of Irma. Be it those who live there or those who are going to go help with the impact and recovery from the storm.
From me as well. I have a few friends in Key West who are staying and riding it out. I tried my best to talk them out of it, but they're stubborn. I'm really worried about them. Luckily for us, our condo is on the 2nd floor of a very sturdy concrete block building and we have steel hurricane shutters over all of our windows and on our deck. We always move everything in from the deck and close all shutters when we leave in May. I just hope the common areas of our complex don't get too badly damaged and, much more importantly, that no one gets killed. - BiggE
I am currently glued to the TV, while hiding behind my storm shutters, which went up yesterday. I am in new construction and 10 miles from the coast. Smack dab in the middle of Naples. They have not issued evacuation for our area and the evac shelter is 3 miles away in a 1 story school. If we are not in the storm surge area, we are as safe at home as anywhere for the next 100 miles north.
We really have to go to mid Georgia to get away from it. |

#1 for me is lemieux, then Gretzky /Orr. Howe and Richard then Jagr. After that not including goalies, the next group is lindros, francis, crosby, Federov, messier, bourque, Coffey, clarke, esposito, and Marcel Dionne. Before the late 60s-70's is a different Era and hard to fit. |

I dislike crosby for many reasons but he is a generational talent. But he's number three or four for the team he plays for. Sixth all time is high for my list. |

I don't put Coffey only because Bourque was better offensiovely than he was (not as great of a skater, though) and didn't play with the powerhouse teams Coffey was on (Edmonton 80s, Pittsburgh early 90s). Messier, although the numbers are there, just never did it for me, but his heyday was before my time. Dionne, again, has the numbers, but a lot of his goals seemed empty (same reason Gartner isn't ont he list), and I'd put Hull ahead of him. |

Bouque was definitely better, messier was like malkin, but better. Gartner vs hull is a longevity issue, hull had three crazy seasons and plenty of other really good ones. Gartner had like 20 30 goal seasons. |
