Like I said last year, to me Matthews > McDavid.
Not in points, but in overall games and eventual outcome in SC.
Matthews is as much of a generational talent as McDavid is, and stronger defensively imo.
McDavid is a 10/10 on offense, 8/10 defense
Matthews is a 9/10 on offense, 9/10 on defense
personally, I like Matthews better due to his hockey IQ in all situations, competitiveness, an ability to be more physical. McDavid obviously has amazing skating, hands, passing/scoring and offensive awareness.
Last season, there were a lot of plays where I felt Matthews held himself back in order to make sure no defensive errors were made by his line; thinking D-first. If he would be thinking offense first, he might have had 15 points more (but potentially Leafs not getting into playoffs).
For me the Leafs' best goal last season was actually Matthews goal vs Wsh game 6; apart from McDavid, Crosby I don't see alot of players pulling that goal off in that fashion.. - MaximusAurelius

I think that was the last time the Leafs beat the Habs FFS... But great game, I totally agree.. - bixll
One of my favourite games the last 20 years. We destroyed them in every area. Hitting, Fighting, Scoring. We literally shamed them. It was awesome! |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it was basically that game that caused Montreal to later sign George Friggin Perros! |

It's pretty satisfying watching fans of other teams talk about Matthews and how he's overrated - burn
It's all jelousy. He's a superstar and he probed it last season. There is no argument agaisnt it.
Kinda like when some Leafs fans always said Price was a bust.
Or when people said Ovi's plus minus made him a horrible player because he was a black hole defensively.
People hate the Leafs a lot and that's what makes this so much sweeter |

So was Bo Horvat, what's your point?
Matthews is a great young player, but so far, from my view, he's in the mold of Stamkos, a shooter type of center. Again, Stamkos is awesome, but he's not a top five center in the league.
I'm not slammin Matthews, I'd love to have him on my team, I just don't think there's justification to say he's a top five center in the league....yet. - LeftCoaster
Matthews has a good shot and has scored with it but most of his goals were scored taking a weak shot from the high slot or jamming at it from the low slot. I don't think it's a good comparison. |

Marleau-Matthews-Nylander
JVR-Bozak-Marner
Hyman-Kadri-Brown
Komarov-Moore-Martin
3 lines of attack with defensively responsible forwards in there as well will be deadly. Even the 4th line is effective.
As for the defense...I expect Rielly-Haisney to start the season but I don't think it'll last long so here it is after that
Dermott/Rosen-Rielly
Gardiner-Zaitzev
Hainsey-Carrick
Marincin

TOR lineup is stacked with NHL wingers. Worth noting, IIRC, Kapanen and Soshnikov don't require waivers.

IMO, Hyman-Matthews-Nylander and JVR-Bozak-Marner return intact. If so, who plays with Marleau-Kadri? Komarov or Brown?

Babcock always liked Marleau's defensive prowess while still able to score. So I say Marleau starts with Kadri:

It's taking less and less time every year.... losing Desharnais was a tough blow... thought I'd lose my job man.
Thank god for Paul Byron. |
