I think Stolarz would be better served as NHL backup so long as TJ Brennan is on the Phantoms.

Mason/Stolarz would've been the Flyers best goaltending for this season (and probably beyond) However, Elliott/Neuvirth will probably be fine

- YuenglingJagr[crosses fingers]

See, my issue with the coming season is there will be a lot of crossing fingers because we took the path that's unknown. Yes, it should fun to watch some of these kids bloom into legitimate NHL players but on the other hand, we have a lot of junk too. I'm not gonna talk up Raffl, Read, Weise, Neuvirth, MacDonald, Laughton, Filppula, Elliot and Lehtara. I just won't do it.

I also have little to no faith in Hakstol. When Chris Vandevelde's roster spot seems as safe as Claude Giroux's, that's a problem.

As far as a contract or anything official I could see that but if the GM and agent didn't talk money and term at some point that seems ridiculous to me. Evem Schultz agent reached out and everyone knew he wasn't coming back

I don't buy that Mason priced himself out of a job with the Flyers considering what he signed for and where

I cannot confirm or deny but based on what I've heard and I'm pretty sure it came from the Mason camp, they never spoke, which later seemed to have fueled frustration from Mason.

Bingo!

Everyone knows I felt trading Schenn this summer was too soon if the Flyers were serious about giving their all for a playoff spot but I also feel like Mason is a much greater loss and an unnecessary loss. You can tell me Konecny and Patrick will make up Schenn's points, no problem with that. Elliot for Mason just isn't a smart move.

Mason is better, but I believe their current goalies are capable of putting together a season that was better than last year at the least and slightly above average at best

How is it that Brian Elliott and his career 913 Save % 2.42 GAA is junk but Steve Mason posting .911 and 2.68 is the proven path?

As for the other names, there is enough competition in camp that if they're the junk you say they are, they won't be playing significant roles on the team.

What else would you like to use to compare the 2?

Career records?:

200 177 63 vs 191 117 35

I was a Mason fan but he's been adequately replaced in my opinion. Especially considering he was dictating his role with the team on his way out.

I apologize if I'm missing something, but why do you need certain field positions to hit certain ways/certain spots in the order? Why does it matter if a guy is hitting .300 with 30 HR and 90 RBI is playing catcher, short shot, or center field?
- jmatchett383

Yeah just to bounce off of what mono said it's not necessarily he's such a good hitter, it's that he's a good hitter at a position not a lot of good hitters play.

Look at Yadier Molina raking at catcher, especially a few seasons ago. Makes his value that much higher.

I know you're not a baseball guy, but Sixto gasses for the Phils to the tune of consistent 98+ in the lower minors ranks. Could be a good one if he keeps getting better.

You really believe the career numbers are representative of their capabilities?

If you seriously do, I am not sure what to tell you. Mason was a mess in Columbus and wasn't the same guy here. Elliott hasn't had a season outside of St Louis with a save percentage over .910. Career numbers is just idiotic

I am confident if Mason and Stolarz were the goalies, Mason would have a save percentage over .915, as he has in 4 of the 5 years he was with the Flyers. I am not confident Elliott will have a save percentage over 0.915.

Is Elliott capable of being an average-slightly above average goalie? Sure. Is Neuvirth capable of being an average-slightly above average goalie? Sure. Are the Flyers capable of making the playoffs with Elliott/Neuvirth? Sure.

I figured he wanted years. The goalie situation league wide was handled prior to Free Agency which was unfortunate for those goalies. I don't think you can read a lot into his eventual signing

Was save % the only number I posted? Elliott has a more proven track record by all measures. IncludIng the last 2 seasons.

Meh, neither one is a top flight guy and neither one is gonna win you a Cup. At this point in the teams development curve, I'm not that concerned with who is in goal
