Simply because Shea Weber is that (frank)ing good, Habs still have a better defense than the Leafs today. Petry and Alzner are good players despite what you're implying.

As for the future, you're entitled to believe in Dermott, Liljegren and other young guys but so are the Habs who have interesting prospects on defense like Victor Mete and Juulsen.

amazing how 4 months ago Emelin and Beaulieu were terrible and now OMG HOW IS MONTREAL GOING TO REPLACE THIS ERA'S NEIDERMAYER/PRONGER!?!?!?!?!?!?

Remember, Weber sucks since last year and Alzner, despite being top 4 on the best defense in the league last season, is garbage and overpaid.

He's an upgrade over Emelin. No doubt in my mind.

He is. I just... You guys have some incredibly poor depth players. It's unreal.

Also he's only an upgrade in the sense that a dumpster fire is more controlled than a tire fire.

Not a very high bar you've set there

Ignoring Weber and Petry (your good Dmen), the sheer number of solid 4-6 guys in Alzner, Benn, Davidson, Schlemko and Streit sets them well ahead of the bottom tier. Most of those guys would fight for top pairing time in New Jersey, Detroit or Vegas as they are now.

I disagree. He's more mobile, smarter with the puck and more reliable.... that's a significant upgrade.

I'm mostly skeptical because it's the exact same people (not you necessarely) that are claiming Alzner is terrible and the Caps did a good thing getting rid of him that were also saying Weber had slowed down and was barely a #1D anymore.

Weber was amazing for the Habs last season.... so.... I got trust issues.

I guess time will tell.

If this was last year I would have to say Buffalo but with the addition of Scandella, Beaulieu and Antipin. I would have to say they belong in the top half on NHL. With the Potential of being top ten because Bogo is oldest dman at 27. With very good depth with Gorges, Guhle and Falk.

That being said i would pick Devils or Vegas

Top half of the NHL? A top-4 of Risto, Scandella, McCabe/Beaulieu and Bogosian might not even break you out of the bottom-10. It's not as horrendous as last year, but you'd need serious improvement from McCabe or Beaulieu and a bounce back from Bogosian along with the assumption that Risto will improve notably with more support and a coach with a more suitable system. Possible, but too many ifs to count on as of now.

Without making a full ranking, I figure they're likely around 21st to 23rd.

No one ever said Weber sucks. The trade to acquire him was terrible, but Weber is still a quality d-man. What I'm saying is that, outside of Weber, the d is awful

And it's not like I'm alone in my opinion on Alzner. It's generally accepted that he's overpaid and not very good. I was SO worried the Leafs were gonna sign him

I disagree completely.

Team has alot of depth as far as NHL defensemen go. You underestimate Petry and Alzner considerably and there is a possibility of seeing Jerabek become our Zaitsev.

A bottom pairing of Benn, Schlemko/Streit is just fine as well.

Keep worrying about the Leafs D my friend, it is way more worrysome than the Habs.

Remarkably Fayne is only 30 and Volchy is 35.

Volchy but when Lou Lams says you're too slow, your too slow.

I'd take Fayne back with a crazy sweetener from the Oilers.
