Today in Flyers History: On Sept 1, 1988, the Flyers traded backup goaltender Wendell Young to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a 1990 third-round pick. Philly later used the selection on defenseman Chris Therien, who went to become the longest-tenured defenseman (753 regular season games) in franchise history.

What a trade! A backup goalie turned into your longest-tenured defenseman! To be honest, I didn't know Bundy was the Flyers' longest-tenured defenseman... and not Howe, McCrimmon, Desjardins, or Timonen.

It's not written in stone, but I'd say 85% chance he makes it as long as he doesn't look awful/get injured in camp/preseason.

And yes, I know.

hyuck hyuck then i guess he's not making the team hyuck hyuck

There are always injuries coming out of camp so we might see an extra rookie face or even two on opening night. Hopefully Patrick gets at least the 10 game look to open the season.

3: Shootouts! Elliot is better than Mason in the shootout and the Flyers will need every point they can scratch out if they want to make the playoffs.

- fls13

Last year, Elliott stopped 10 of 12 (.833); great year in that regard. Mason faced a lot more and stopped 28 of 36 (.778); good season in that regard. For their careers, Elliott has a .673 shootout save percentage while Mason is at .655. Pretty negligible difference in an average season.

Injuries were a big factor for many of these players. I'd personally have though Joe Watson (with the team from 1967-68 inaugural season through 1977-78) would have had the most games played but he played 746 games (2nd in franchise history among D-men) to Bundy's 753.

The current top 30 entering the 2016-17 season:

1 Chris Therien 753
2 Joe Watson 746
3 Eric Desjardins 738
4 Ed Van Impe 617
5 Jim Watson 613
6 Mark Howe 594
7 Kjell Samuelsson 545
8 Andre Dupont 539
9 Braydon Coburn 537
10 Kimmo Timonen 519

My favorite Gagne memory was being at MSG and watching him win the game like 8 seconds into OT. The Garden was not pleased.

Better supporting cast, better team shooting and healthy should turn G back into an top ten points guy, if that happens then we will have other in the top 20 in scoring. That'd be nice.

Thinking about the home grown D we have coming. I think Provy may be new #1 in 10 years but also Sanheim and a few others may crack top 10-20.

Yeah, I kind of gave away my age by not mentioning any '60s/'70's d-men... but wow, that's a great list! Bill, thanks very much for posting it.

All have done great interviews on Stern but Nash's interview was amazing!
Young had some pretty damn good stuff with crazy horse too, Cortez the Killer, Down by the river, Don't bring me Down...But CSNY doing that 3 part harmony was amazing.
