Although also an "Original Six" team in the Red Wings, for the obvious reasons, including the 1972 Cup Finals, it would have been more fitting if Ratelle's honors were on a home game night when they would be playing against the Bruins. - RangerSaver
Yes, because he also played with Boston. But do you want to dredge up or have discussed the trade that sent him away in the night he is being honored by having that team in the building?
That right there is the closest anyone has ever come to comparing David Schwimmer and Robert Deniro.

In looking at it now on your latter premise, (& coincidentally, this blog's subject matter), Jan, I can see how your contrasting feeling makes sense FOR Rangers fans. Many younger Rangers fans than you likely never saw Ratelle even play a single game here, as per you, I and others also wondering as to the questionable voting on these "Rangers worst trades" type blogs.
But, as well as each of our obvious reasons mentioned, I simply felt that it was of best relation FOR BOTH the Rangers organization AND Jean Ratelle, to have this event held on the night of a Rangers/Bruins game. At least in chief, it will still be held prior to a game against another Original Six team in the Red Wings.
That trade led Espo to demand the Rangers to get him aging, Ken Hodge to be his line mate again. The rest is history, with in my opinion, the worst Rangers trade made overall from 1963 to today, in 10 years younger, and projected 40G/40A All Star forward, Rick Middleton being the bait for 96 games worth only of RW, Ken Hodge. It's a good thing that with Hodge gone, Espo at least helped lead the Rangers to a Cup Finals (a la, Marty St. Louis in 2014 in some ways), with help from part time rookie, Don Maloney as his opposite side LW instead.
