It was bound to happen at some point.
People will likely point at drafting, signings etc and immediately blame Holland. But as a Wings fan from 89'... I have a bit different take.
To me the downfall was clearly attributed to 3 factors:
-Not finishing poor enough in 10years to draft (1) elite dman and / or proper depth on the backend.
-Not having suspected players fill the voids of the top players (IE - Tatar/Nyquist not filling Datsyuk/Zetterberg's shoes).
-The Wings always just slightly better then they really were in the last 5 years because of Datsyuk/Zetterberg, this made Holland continue to try and build around those two, despite their age slowly catching up with them.
Basically, Holland's pension to try and stay competitive, and reasonably so, instead of being terrible for 10years like CHI, LA and PITs did before their got a fresh start with elite talent.
BUT even that doesnt guarantee anything, playing kids doesnt guarantee anything so Im not going to say Holland could have made some better contract choices, but will letting Darren Helm walk and having AA make us a 2nd round playoff team? I dont think it does -- in addition there are no more BIG FISH out there to sign anyways, even if you saved a bunch of cap space, who they gonna get? ...
I think the main issue I have, is that Holland is getting blamed for bad contracts, when the players should be blame for not living up to 3-4mil contracts as 2nd tier players.
WAY too many guys, just not playing to their capabilities is a much bigger problem than the contracts that Holland has handed by way of looking at the player and what they make.
The only solution, is to trade out players and take peanuts back to clear space to sign your young player and hope some of them become another Z / Datsyuk.

$17 million in 1997-98 then only $2 mill the next two years
That top line and pairing in Detroit in 2002 made more money than the entire Hurricanes team. |
