This topic makes me realize that highlight reel goals stand out in the memory more than highlight reel saves. I could have come up with a few best goal nominees from memory, but not saves.
I have to go with the goal line save against Kuznetsclown, because you know it's good when the player starts to celebrate and the arena puts the spotlight on as if was a goal, but the ref is waving his arms. And I love Freddy's poker face as he's getting some water after the play, then his subtle nod to a teammate in acknowledgement. Good Scandinavian, washes his balls with ice water. Of course the fact that the save was against Kuznetsclown enhances the enjoyment.
Freddy was overshadowed by the flashy kid forwards last year but he was a treat after years of beach balls bouncing slowly past Leaf goalies from centre ice. I love how he throws a little flare on a lot of his glove saves, really stabbing it out there. Finally a Leafs trade for a platoon/backup goalie from California that worked. FREDDY!

Mike, you didn't include Freddy's robbing of Kuznetsclown in the poll options, just fyi. Loving these highlight clip blogs, I hope you have an assist of the year edition in the works.

Assist of the year is already set in stone - Nylander breaking the ankles of about three Sabres jabronis before sliding a no-looker to Matthews who was in pretty much his own postal code just waiting to fire top glove against Lehner

Set up or assist of the season was today's column. If anyone has suggestions, put them in the comments. I have 4 really good ones already selected.

I don't remember that particular play, but your description is making my Leafs boner stir.
I have a visual memory of a twisted and depraved Marner pass where he fired it blind across the crease and I don't remember the details at the moment but I bet it turns up on a list. I remember when they were talking about that play on tv, O'Dog was like 'this is just ridiculous'.
I have to disagree though lumsie, Matthews reverse behind-the-net pass to the Komagod was the assist of the year league-wide.
It's pretty cool though, there's a lot of really great plays by the super rookies to choose from. And I recall a lot of good ones by Kadri, JVR, and Gardiner as well. Or even Boyle, his setup on that OT winner against Washington has to make the list.

I not only remember the play, I see it everytime that I close my eyes at night...
I'll agree that the Matthews assist was ridiculous, but the fact that this one left three Sabres as broken, twisted wrecks will always put it at the #1 spot for me...

Looking forward to it. Well, as above I can't remember the details of that Marner play lol...but Marner I assume will be on the list. Matthews' assist to Komagod vs. the Caps of course. Also Matthews' intentional faceoff loss assist would be a candidate.

Yeah, that was awfully pretty. Matthews (frank)ing wires that puck too. Everything Nylander does is awfully pretty.

I remember a game against the Canucks, i was taking a poop and could see the tv from the pooper if i leaned right. But i had finished my beer. well my wife went and got me one and assisted me in having the game, my poop and beer all come together for the win.

It really is. I don't know if I'm in the minority here or not, but I honestly think that Nylander is a shade better than Marner. And I (frank)ing love Marner, that little (frank)er is on the back of my jersey

I don't think you're far off...I think because Marner can be a flashy one man show at times people have him above Nylander, but Nylander got better as the season went on and it's a toss-up at best between those two.
I said from day one any talk of trading Nylander was insane. This notion early in the season that if the Leafs had signed Vesey they would have traded Nylander for a Dman, if that's true, which I don't think ShannaLou are insane, the Leafs dodged a bullet there.
I wouldn't trade Nylander for anything less than a bona fide number one dman on the level of an OEL, or if it was a lesser dman it better come with a very high first. This kid is going to be the top forward on the Swedish national team for years.

Aw yeah, that second clip was the Marner pass I had in my mind. I mean, that is just...it's just so wrong in a good way, same with the first one, that no-look touch pass.
