That is John Scott's views on Toews and Kane from his book. Good stuff.

Thanks for posting. Couple good hockey docs coming out. Sean Avery's is one I am pumped to read. Believe it releases in OCT.

Andreas Athanasiou, what kind of package could we come up with for? He plays center and left Wing 6-2 190 23yo with 18 goals in 64 games last year in 13mins of ice time. and is extremely fast from what I read? He would be great on Kanes wing. he is not happy with his RFA offer. We could give him a 2 mil 2 year deal after hossa went on LTIR.

You need to be in TIME OUT for a couple of months! The stick is getting old.

You need to lighten up and recognize a humorous thread when you see one.

And you seem not to be able to correctly understand Jewish references that you make - organizations (APAC?) or Yiddish expressions (it's SHTICK, not stick).

I keep seeing these roster projections with Roszival as #7. I say not a chance. Remember that Hawks management told Campbell he would not be brought back as a player. There is no way Rozy plays ahead of Oesterle or Forsling. I firmly believe he is number 8. He will be put on IR to start the season with "soreness"
- Omahawk

You're right and you're wrong. Rozy and Tootoo have salaries at $650k and 700k, respectively. They are roster filler. For a team up against the cap, Rozy sitting in the press box as 7th D hits the cap at $650k (prorated over the season). Forsling sitting in the press box (his salary is $872k) costs the hawks an extra $212k against the cap over the year. Every $100k matters to Stan.

So you're right, we'd all hope to see Forsling play more than Rozy. And I think we will. But on days when a guy like Forsling isn't in the lineup, he'll be in Rockford, with Rozy as the 7th D sitting in the press box and saving them a little bit of cap space every day he does.

Exact same thing for Tootoo and the depth forwards.

I have no problem with Tootoo on line 4 as he was a significantly better hockey player than I thought going into the season. He was a substantial upgrade to Mashinter the Hawks enforcer role and that jag-off Biteto on Nashville will never take a run at Patty Kane again after Tootoo beat his face in and franked up his shoulder in their fight.

I saw a Sun Times article today, trying to project the Hawks line up for this year.
This has to be difficult this year, with all of the new faces and reappearing faces. We here has kicked around the line up quite a bit. But they have Jurco penciled into the third line. IT would be great if he turned into Panik 2.0 ...... but I don't see or understand the Jurco love. Second City hockey has top 25 propects under 25, and they have Jurco listed lower than some guys just drafted. He is in sort of a make or break season, and I do hope he breaks out. But just don't see what the Hawks see in him. Is there something that I am missing about him ? What do you guys see ?

What would the hawks offer for Athansiou? 2018 or 2019 1st and forsling or debricant sign Athansiou to 2 or 3 year contract 2 to 2.5 million per year

if they wanted schamltz I would probably pass. he is signed for 2 more years at $925 and put up the same type of numbers as Him. I'm sure they would not want Jurco back. I was thinking Forsling and 1st. we do not have much other that has value. I think debrinct and our 1st round pick this year has some value but not enough.

Here's the scoop on Athanasiou, as I have seen him quite a lot.
In junior he also had great speed and even used it with some good puck control, and was really conscientious at being a defensive and middle zone player, because he as an attacker he simply never played as fast on the attack in most carries. He either unconsciously or consciously became / stayed a perimeter player.

Like a ball of fire coming with possession, and then would flub the puck or lose it when into the greasy areas and battle zone around the horn of the goal and the side walls.

Here's what I wrote BEFORE he was drafted:
https://www.draftsite.com...andreas-athanasiou/17666/

So you have this unpolished product who unfortunately was part of a large group of Wing prospects who were turning pro at the same time...put this fact in you memory banks as the hawk will be having continual years of many new amateur prospects graduating to pro AHL/NHL and squared off against each other to fill major league jobs...and tb]the "Greek Streak" is feeling like he wasn't given enough shots at Wing playing time and now he and his agent want to see the love in $ form and ice tick...and like every young guy nowadays he at very least wants to get paid even if the inn is over filled, because he thinks he has a reservation. I am happy for him scoring 17 goals so did Britt Selby and he was rookie of the year. Do it a couple times and and then I'll pay you, but right now, you aren't my go to guy, or close. Use the KHL for leverage? It won't replace more than a season of production. This isn't Johansen or close. This isn't an impact stand alone attcacker and the Wings know it, or they would be playing nice.

I'm not sure if you want to spend assets even AHL players for a guy who basically wants to be paid and play and is quite less than a prime time ready player despite the scoring numbers.

Let me tell you a little rookie of the year story from maybe before you were born. Britt Selby won the Calder in like 1965.
The next year he didn't score and it sorta looked like the success might have come from the likes of the core forwards of Frank Mahovlich,Bob Pulford, Dave Keon , George Armstrong,Eddie Shack (26 goal),Ronnie Ellis, Red Kelly converted to a centre and great one at that!, and Tim Horton was pretty good from the defense too.
So they dumped Selby. he broke his leg along the way and never got better than that first year and was expansion draft fodder to the Flyers in 1967-68.

Yeah, i know. the game has changed but not paying or over paying if you see flaws might be the reason to stay away from guys seeking more when you can work with the players you know and are developing instead of adding to the Hawk logjam and having to pay to do so.

If he would sign for that amount Detroit would sign him or he would get an offer sheet.

Any team could give him an offer sheet for up to $3.9 million and only give up their own 2nd round pick. (Of course the Hawks do not have the cap room and they do not have their own 2nd round pick).

The Hawks could trade their Debrincat to Montreal and get the Hawk's 2018 2nd round pick back (from the Fleischman/Weisse trade). Then trade Hossa's contract and the Hawk's 2018 and 2019 1st round picks to Arizona or NJ (both teams have plenty of cap space) for a bag of pucks and the cap space. Then the Hawks could send a $3.5 mil 5 year offer sheet to Athansiou. You basically would be adding a top 6 player to the team without giving up a player off of your roster and gaining cap space. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!

I think the KHL is a smoke screen. Look for the Wings to move someone on their roster (or unload Franzen's contract) and sign him to a two or three year bridge deal.

he had 17 EV goals in 64 games in 13 mins of TOI. not sure where you find the # but that probably puts him in the top 10-15 on EV goals pre 60 mins. we are a team the struggled with EV goals. teams that score EV goals typically are the ones that go far.

IMO, Hawks didn't really struggle to score 5v5 (8th out of 30 and only 3 goals out of the top 5). I'm thinking that since they lost a lot defensive talent in Hossa,Kruger, Hjalmarsson, they might want to focus on guys that can help them prevent some goals.

Jonathan Toews explains why he altered his offseason training regime: 'I might have overdone it'

Days after the Blackhawks were swept in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, Jonathan Toews made it known that he wanted to make "some little changes" to his offseason training program.

He went on to say that he never quite reached the level of play that he wanted to during the 2016-17 season after scoring a career-low 21 goals and totaling 58 points for the second straight year. Not bad, but not great by his standards.

In a recent interview with Sportsnet's Chris Johnston, Toews opened up about why he altered his offseason regime from the previous year.

“Last summer is the first time I really got the time to train really hard and I might have overdone it in the wrong way," Toews admitted. "Just worrying about power and strength all the time. I came into the season and just couldn’t move, just felt slow. I mean the game is so fast nowadays. It’s kind of a wake-up call in that sense.”

The game indeed is getting faster, and younger players are breaking into the league much quicker because of it. Look no further than Connor McDavid, who's quickly emerged as the face of the NHL.

It's also evident after watching the Pittsburgh Penguins win back-to-back Stanley Cups with their speed, not necessarily grit.

Toews recognizes that, and it's why he's making the necessary changes to help return to top form and get the Blackhawks back on track in doing so.

“When you see the top players nowadays they’re all on the ice,” Toews said. “They’re on the ice all the time just working on skill and that’s something I’m really going to focus on going forward.

"Just getting back to playing with the puck, knowing that that’s the type of player I am, and not just being overly concerned with the defensive two-way hockey but knowing that I can go out there and contribute with the best of them, too, if I put my mind to it a little bit more.”

So, he trained last year to be an athlete, rather than a hockey player... and he over did it at that.

That's.... not good.

E. Staal said the same things around the start of the 2014-2015 season about the previous year. He would have just been turning 30. Has had a bit of a bounce back, but really has never been the guy he was when he was carrying the Hurricanes on his back.
