Rating a team's top prospects is a little misleading. The Flyers do have quite a few great prospects but to be fair, many of them are 20 yrs plus old and are still in the minors or in Europe or coming out of junior. Many other teams have young players who are the same age but are NHLers so they are no longer a "prospect". Eichel, Matthews, McDavid, Werenski come to mind - BernardShakey
Provorov and Konecny also come to mind. |

"In the long term, Cechmanek hurt his stature by alienating some of his Philadelphia teammates."
This is an outrage!!!!!!!! Even though it is a part of Flyers history, it HAS to come down!!!!! We won't stand for this!!!!
Oh, wait..... STATURE ....... never mind |

The Flyers have two slide-eligible players playing last year in Provorov and Konecny. They'll likely have 18-year-old Nolan Patrick playing this year.
Most players don't play in the NHL until they're 20 or over due to slide eligibility. Also, most college players aren't able to sign contracts until they are 21/22 years old.
So yes, while several teams have 1-2 players on their roster that are 20 or under, the Flyers also fall into this category and their range of prospects (even top ones like Hart and Rubstov) are still under 20. |

I remember Roman skating out of his crease gesturing to the bench during the flyers Ottawa implosion in the playoffs. I have never seen an effort by a team so lazy and disinterested. That's how the team looked although I would have to think the team was into the game.
At the time I commented that yeah I'd call out my team as well. After the emotion of the event calmed I knew that Roman would have to go. Should have said his piece in the locker room. - bird_dog_pa
Was Barber Coach at the time? The Chick magnet doing that was no different than a Laviolette time out. This was a group of vets. They deserved to be yelled at by someone but unfortunately at the time, the majority ruled. The only teams I've seen consistently more lazy were Carter/Richards matanee games. |

Roenick was leading a players' revolt against the coach - JR and the boys had quit on the series.
Roman was furious, and tried to embarrass them.
Funny how he ended up being the scapegoat. |

Fun fact:
One of the reasons the Flyers got Cechmanek was to lure over Jiri Dopita - known at the time as "the best player outside the NHL."
Good times. |

It is a bit of a shame for Cechmanek to be remembered for his playoff shortcomings. When he was good, he was really good. When he was bad, he was terrible.
The flip side of being remembered the way Cechmanek is remembered is Keith Primeau.
If not for the OT goal against the Pens in 5OT and the 2004 playoff run, how would Keith Primeau be remembered as a Flyer?
Some fans still don't forgive Primeau for publicly crushing Bill Barber. Imagine how Flyers fans would perceive Primeau's Flyers career had he not had playoff success. |

Yup
And fellow Hall of Nowhere member Al Hill once scored 5 points in a game. Funny thing was that it was in his very first NHL game!
Sadly, it was all downHill from there

Matthews only scored 4 points in his first game.
He's not even worthy of being a bust. |

Mario Lemieux scored his first goal on his first shot on his first shift.
After that, he was never as good/efficient. |

Excellent Blog, Bill! Since 2013, the even managed 2 playoff appearances (however quickly they ended). In this era of the NHL, building through the draft is the only successfully proven approach to building long-term NHL success. The Free Agency route, as a primary means of building a roster, no longer works and is usually ends up landing the team in cap trouble. At some point in the next 3 years, its likely Hexy pursues a top free agent forward but they will be closer to competing for a title at that point.
Sidenote: Didn't Cole Bardreau attend Cornell Univ.? |
