Auston Matthews should do what Crosby did and get his contract the same as his number.

Both McDavid and Draisaitl are overpaid by about $1-$1.5 because of the Oil tax. Edmonton is one of those teams that has to shell out a little more dough to either attract or retain players. That, and Chiarelli has a history of overpaying.

Getting paid for potential is a good strategy? Because young players have never had a good season before they went down hill?

Totally disagree with you. It is one thing to pay a young PROVEN star a big contract. It is another to pay a player based on 1 year. Go Peter Chiarelli!

Paying for past performance is clearly one of the biggest issues in the salary cap era. I think Marleau is an overpay. It is a reasonably well thought out overpay - as his contract will expire when Matthews and Marner will get paid. Kopitar is an overpay as he did not, and likely will not perform at peak levels for the duration of that 8 year deal. Draisaitl is a 3rd overall pick that finished 8th in scoring last year - performed very well in the playoffs and is likely to get better. Similarly, Bautista was a very good player, doesn't mean Jays should pay him $20 plus million a year as he approaches 40 years of age. So I totally disagree with you.

Marleau is an overpay. We all know it.

But it's for two years (3rd year will magically disappear through Lou-magic), and it's using cap space we have, so no harm, no foul.

Crumpled on my bedroom floor, next to the bed.

Sorry I had to leave so early - I had an early meeting.

Please let yourself out and lock the door when you leave.

And hey, I'll call you.

Maybe not in the next couple of days...I'm really busy. And I'll be out of town this weekend, so not really a good time...

But I swear, I'll call you. We should grab a coffee or something..

Wow, my schedule next week is just slammed...
