Wow!!! 21M tied up in 2 players... - Clyde334
Yup. Same as toews and kane in Chicago. Which I'm sure it'll be fine... Chicago hasn't had any cap problems... |

You're right, Leon did a fantastic job leading the Oilers past the Ducks in the playoffs last year. Totally makes sense to give him 8.5 per year. |

I think we all expected a drop. But that drastic of a drop probably isn't warranted. People with real knowledge of our prospects should be able to see that it's pretty well stocked. I think I've seen other lists that have us in the top 10 (this one has us ranked 8th)
http://thehockeywriters.c...arm-systems-2017-ranking/
Don't really know they guy, but it seems like he was basing his lists on who has the shiniest high-profile prospects and not on the actual depth. Doesn't really matter though, we're pretty happy with who we have on our roster and in our system right now - Saskabush
That's a definitely more well assessed article
sounds like they actually know what they're talking about

And the Chiarelli era continues up in Deadmonton.
$21M in two players before you even win a Stanley Cup is a classic Chia move. Add in Lucic and Russell and Edmonton is paying 4 players $31 million dollars. That's almost half their cap on 4 players, only two of which are even close to worth their money.
No idea how Chiarelli's gonna navigate this gongshow but it'll be fun to watch. Isn't Talbot up for a new deal next year? Good luck with that one. |

The cap hits aren't egregious. when Toews and Kane signed their contracts, they took up more than 30% of the total cap space (granted it was like 29% during the season it kicked in). I think the season it kicked it, they had a ridiculous 58% or something committed to their top six players. |

I don't think it matters if the Flames have a firm grasp on how to use the English language when it comes to playing hockey .
But, if you're trying to sound smart on an internet message board it is a skill worth learning. Chin-up there little guy, you'll get there someday |

It's not so much the cap hits (both players received fair market value), it's who they have running the show that makes us laugh.
Peter Chiarelli is not Stan Bowman. I (along with many Oiler fans) do not think Chia is smart enough to navigate his team through the tough decisions that will be coming his way. Add in stupid contracts like Kris Russell's and you can see why we're kind of happy with what is going on up North. |

so say all prospects suck, and only 2 make it as 3rd lines.
JG/Money/Ferl
Thachuk/Backs/Frolik
Benny/Janko/Foo
a top 9 of those guys with an average age of around 22 and two old guys at 28ish?Looks like we have a few years to rebuild the fwd pool.
Goalies, lots of depth, just need one to hit. always the issue as the develop slower
D....not really worried there. Gio brings the age up but he's got a good 4yr left at least.

Oh no McDavid is worth every penny of that $12.5 mil he'll be making in two years, Draisaitl will probably be worth his cap hit, too.
It's the Lucic and Russell contracts that are the ones that are going to screw them. I'm just saying that Toews and Kane won a Cup before making their insane amounts of money. McDavid and Draisaitl haven't done anything yet. |

Yeah it's more this than anything. Chiarelli does not have a good track record when he's having cap issues and he's going to have a big one as soon as next season. Almost 50% of your cap being taken up by 4 players doesn't make things easy, especially when two of those players are Lucic and Russell. We've seen Chiarelli struggle in this situation before, and I've seen nothing from him to indicate he won't do it again. |

I think McDavid and Dre deserve the money though. It's the rest of the dead weight that's the problem. Just shy of 60 mill next year tired up in 12 contracts plus a buy out. That only leaves 15 between 11 guys.
Talbot is signed through this year ,and next. He'll be owed a hefty raise as well which means trade him or someone else. Smart thing is to make room for him. I would guess around 7-8 aav if he keeps his play up. |
