you're a great Poster DDM-Coga and we all enjoy your contributions. In saying that, you're talking Butcher down a bit due to how his relationship soured with Colorado. He may not be as good as we hope, but, will likely be a bit better than your insinuating. We've all acted the same way with Vesey and especially peterson.

my follow up post explains more about him. I just think he is a project prospect still. He could maybe be an NHLer and carve out a few seasons in this league if he keeps on improving.

But his natural skill set doesnt translate directly into the best league in the world. Kid needs some major AHL time IMO.

Hasn't he looked like trash every time he played against better competition?

Just the way Jack carries himself and talks about the team....i mean...is there really any question that he should be the captain?
- feetontheair22

I think there is a very real question. It could go either way IMO.

From the same article:

"I think with Jack, he could be a really big influence on other players around him," Housley said. "He has that aura around him that he's one of the top players in the League. I just want him to play. Play the game and don't worry about any distractions.

"There are so many demands on you as a player, especially having a big impact on an organization. It seems like everybody wants a piece of you, but that's why I'm going to try to make it comfortable
for the players so they can just come to the rink, enjoy coming to the rink every day. There are going to be ups and downs, we know that, but as long as they can enjoy coming to the rink every day, I think that's a great feeling."

I'm not suggesting that Jack would be uncomfortable as the captain, but I am certain it would require that he address a great many obligations/distractions that he wouldn't have if he were "just playing the game."

Admittedly, being a captain would allow him to "be a really big influence" on the team, also.

You still sign him regardless, asset is an asset. What he has done the past 2 years he is worthy of a contract but he that Roy line really put a chip on his shoulder. I just dont see how his game translates to the NHL. I think Bednar and Pratt fit his style way more than Roy so that makes sense

Not a bad skater but an awkward one, very undersized, not very offensive minded. Very high hockey IQ is his saving grace but for a small, not offensive and mediocre skater to be a "2 way defender" in the NHL. I could see it being a disaster for him if he doesnt have the tools to skate out of trouble

from what I saw in the frozen four, he handled the big bodies well and like you said, he's got smarts...I keep thinking of what Housley was able to do with ryan ellis...yeah, I know, the talent-level isn't quite the same, but butcher has shown significant year-over-year improvement...

he's a free asset for anyone that can sign him, so i'm in

somewhat. He didnt look great at the WJCs and has never really stood out at Avs Dev camps the past 3 years. Last year he had his best one to date (he wasnt a huge standout but looked better than most) but as a 21 year old going against 18 year olds, he should have.

I still say you go after the kid, you never know.

I just am sayign to temper expectations....I have come across a few ArmChair GMs on this site who have him penciled in as a 2nd pair guy on the left side to start this season.

If you are tryign to tank for Dahlin thats a good way to do it

personally I want him to sign with Vegas. The Knights have way too many Dmen to begin with that actually are NHLers. Sign Butcher and be forced even more so to move one of them for Cheap off the roster

Brian Campbell wasn't very good when he first entered the league and he became the guy everybody wanted back for leadership before he hung up the skates. If you have a contract spot available, you take a shot, I can't believe someone would say you don't want the guy because he's willing to play in the AHL if it helps him long term career wise. I am pretty sure GMJB knows a Hell of a lot more about this kid than any of the hindsight GM's on these boards.
