Hmmm let me think

Top 10 in shot suppression
top 15 in SA60
Top 10 in Corsi against
Top 15 in relative corsi against

Yup but you're right he's garbage, so you might as well stick with the Dan Girardi's and Marc Staals of the world.

I'd take Chris Tanev's top 15 "SA60" over Brent Burns 29 goals anyday.

"Relative" is a measure of your team.

It shows how much better a player is relative to his team mates.
Vancouver sucks, but in relative terms to his team-mates he is so much better than every other Dman defensively.

Where along the line did anyone say that Girardi or Staal is a top level defenseman right now???
Seriously, think about and answer this question before we waste anymore of everyone's time.

When we talk about "stats" people, it's kind of funny because the vast majority of conversations about hockey players revolve around crazy stats like "shots" and "goals."

No one is using hard to understand, obscure stats to paint Chris Tanev as a good defensenman.

All you have to do is see that he generally limits other teams shot-attempts, shots, scoring chances and goals. It seems to me that you if your job is defense, you can't have negative outcomes in these four categories and be considered effective.

If you contribute positively to your team getting shots and preventing them, shots being the only known way to get goals, which are how you win games, which is the entire point, then I see no way in which a player can be good if he doesn't have a measurable positive effect on a game.

and that's pretty much what it helps with.

i assume tanev faced the toughest competition and still finished ahead on his team.

so if you didn't already know from watching him, he is the best defensive dman on the nucks.

but that stat says nothing about him in comparison to players on different teams.

I believe his point is that while it shows you definitively how one compares to their teammates, it has no frame of reference for comparing against other players across the league.

it doesnt really compare soemone to teammates either...in a literal sense it does, but there are other factors.

using any one specific stat is a recipe for failure no matter what it is. they all have flaws

I still would take Brent Burns 29 goals over Chris Tanev's top 10 relative Corsi

gotta be honest with you right back

Yeah. All of these stats are flawed one way or another. Looking at them all paints a much clearer picture.

Let me ask you. Do you think Chris tanev's amazing relative Corsi makes him as good as Brett Burns?
