From the last blog:

So you think that Hextall was lying when he said MacDonald was waived because they had "to put our best team on the ice Thursday night?"

If that's the case, why didn't one of Medvedev (an unknown) or Schultz (a 6/7 man, at best) get waived in favor of AMac? Medvedev was waived multiple times, so they had no issue sending him down. Schultz was more of an NHL vet that AMac, he should have been taking it just as easy as AMac

I'm gonna give the GM the benefit of the doubt here that he wasn't lying and was putting the best team on the ice that he could.

Note: I'm not trying to put AMac down, simply saying that, if he or Manning dog it in camp, they may find themselves sent to the AHL if they kids outplay them...imho.

I don't recall Medvedev ever getting waived

I'd be happy to discuss this with you on the other blog. No reason to move it and clog up this thread.

I figured you wouldn't see it since this is the new thread.

You are right, he was just a healthy scratch for a half season. Still, he would have been as likely of a candidate as AMac to be waived to start the year. Schultz would seem like the most likely choice.

It's my belief that Amac just dogged it and got outplayed by guys who showed they belonged more, and were rewarded accordingly.

The mid 90s units were good, very good. However, for the most part Hextall and Snow were both pretty solid and, and this is a huge advantage on the PK, they both excelled at controlling dump ins and firing them right back out of the zone. Those PK units also benefited from a ridiculously deep pool of top faceoff guys. When every D zone faceoff on the PK is being taken by Brind'amour, Otto, MacTavish or Lindros, you are going to get a lot of quick, easy clears.

edit: also, in what was probably their best season when it came to PK in that era, 95-96, Hextall was tied for 1st in the league in GAA and was 5th in Sv%. He really was very good that season.

They were solid, not spectacular. I think (95/96 aside) it was more of very good PK skaters and solid goaltending more than the other way around.

Yeah I don't think you can really deny it. If they wanted him in the NHL or thought he deserved it he would've been there

Imo. Take couturier out of the pp equation. Give him heavy even and pk time. The most ES time should be coots calling card

Couturier has already seen heavy ES ice time in recent seasons.

He was 3rd amongst forwards in ES TOI/GP last year, so I don't think that will be an issue. But I'd put him back at the top of the PK rotation.

I liked Matthews, but he was a dead man walking on the team. I like what I have seen of Darby...still another guy theyll have to pay, but corner was going to be terrible this year

I liked Matthews as well but Darby is a good young CB.....had to pay a price, but if Matthews was going to be in the slot again, I'm not sure it's a huge loss....they have brought in guys that can replace those #s.

Filppula, Lehtera, Read, Raffl, Weise, MacDonald.

Is anyone really excited to watch this team, this year? I would say this season is a stepping stone and I'm more excited about individual play.

Yeah I am more upset about the draft pick long term. Matthews wasn't getting resigned. I do think Darby will be their best CB now, by a mile. I really am not a Mills fan and don't even get me started on Patrick Robinson. He needs to be fired into the sun on the same rocket at AMac

PP1 is fine. PP2 is a dumpster fire. Hopefully some of the younger kids in time will step up and fill some of the gaping holes in that unit.

How Weal does in a full season will also be very interesting to me. Will he get to run PP2?

And I think Sanheim plays most of the season in the NHL.

Yes, I am very excited

But you have the advantage of knowing the names of more than one top 9 forward, four fourth line forwards, and one defenseman on the Flyers roster.

Arguably the most excited I've been for a season to start in some time. Anxious to see the flux of youth, individual play / progress, how Elliot plays with us, and the start of Patrick.

I am 100% excited to watch this team this year and the fact that you only listed 6 players as justification for your question is a bit disingenuous because there are a bit more than 6 players on an NHL team.

Patrick, Lindblom, Sanheim, Morin, Hagg, Konecny, Provorov, Gostibehere plus seeing if Giroux\Jake bounce back. Seeing if Simmonds continues his performance. Knowing that in watching this year we are 1 year closer to all the young players being here.
