NYI drafted 7 D in 2012. 90 NHL games combined so far.
- manvanfan

Nyi are also run by the worst management team currently in the NHL though. Drafting has been awful for a long time.

There drafting has been better then Vans.

D won't look so bad in 5 years when there is some experience there.

We are talking about drafted d, not sure how it evolved to overall. I suppose if we merge the two subjects, we have higher hopes for the likes of brisebois and juolevi. Chatfield and stecher for free Agents. I dont have exceptionally high hopes today for our D in the next few years based off of our drafted as of late. Not saying that wont change but, how can you...

Van has lots of young D already is what I'm saying. With OJ coming up. Really all they would really need is a true number 1.

That actually might be possible at TDL if Canucks retain salary as they have one spot open. Just don't think Pens want to pay for him lol.

If Guadette continues to progress with bigger role and pressure this season then JB might think he's ready to step in. Same with EP. Those two becoming NHL ready puts JB in position to offload that Sutter contract on a contender who could use him in support role. Preds, Habs, Rangers are early favorites that Sutter might have off his NTC list.

What IF Van decides to win games this year and are in a playoff spot come TDL. Do you still sell for the better good? Or do you give the Sedins one last crack at the playoffs?

Don't forget Tree he can easily come back in that time period and it's instant replace of Edler for example. You are right JB hasn't drafted a lot of D. But the higher picks he's used on D seem to be NHL quality in Tree, Brisebois and OJ. Plus JB signing Stecher helps.

I can see him in 2018 adding top D to the pool. Manvanfan is right about #1D. So if Canucks lucky enough to get Dahlin or top scoring D, as many are up for 2018 draft, it's a good bunch to ply into Canuck core.

Why are you counting a Golden Knight as one of our D?

You are never going to have a rookie D make the team every year.
True number 1 D- 1st line forwards- top 6 forwards - top 4 D.

You mean bubble spot or a secured WC spot... that's a bridge too far to contemplate. The earliest I can imagine that happening is 2018. The big IF being prospects have accelerated development and key UFA's signed with Sedin retirement too lol.

But we know if JB thinks he's making the playoffs, or has a chance, there is no way he's selling. Plus there is no pressing need to trade vets who are locked up this season.

JB's biggest pressure for 2018 contract wise is Guddy to pay or get assets. Then Sven, Granlund and Stecher on big pay raises for core status or trade.

Depends on spots and development. Canucks have brought in three rookie D's last couple seasons in Hutton, Stecher and Tree. All 3 are NHL legit to keep or build up into tradable assets. Tree taking a sabbatical opens opportunity for OJ to try to stick this season.

A vet D trade or loss by 2018 opens it up again for...? Well other then OJ or Tree coming back don't see another D ready next season. Reluctantly adding long shot Subban. But getting Dahlin could change that maybe...see him more brought in to play in AHL first.

That's why we don't need a ton more D prospects. 3 possible D under 200 NHL games played.

we gotta forget about getting Dahlin, we will be better this year AND even if somehow the floor fell out the draft lottery is against us. Just not in the cards.

Retaining salary would not be an option. Basically if someone would bite on Sutters contract we would have to look at it. Wouldn't get much in return but it would free up some valuable cash and space for us. I like what Sutter brings but we could spend a bit more wisely.

Right. You need balance. Codes concentrate to stockpile D suggestion seems limiting. Though looking at draft class for 2018 if JB has a shot at adding #1D he'll take it. Then look to center needs where this class is good just not as deep on options as 2017 was that had less good D options too.

Hope. There are a lot of players in this upcoming draft who could help Van. If a team is offering a first for anyone not named Bo, OJ, BB or anyone prospect. It should be taken.

serious doubts anyone is giving up a 1st from this draft....nothing in the 1st 20 anyways.

We have to trust in JB that he will make a solid choice with our selections

I'm a strong believer that if you have a lotto ticket you can win in this new system. Laffs were only team that won without moving up and Flyers proved how far a team can. Meaning not stuck on finishing bottom 5 to win a lotto pick. It's ALL luck and the weight system is pretty weak. So as long as Canucks miss playoffs I will still be thinking of them having a chance to win on Dahlin up to lotto draw.
