It's really sad when an Oilers fan has the most reasonable post in the Flames thread.

I'm not trying to defend Brouwer's season. He had a bad one, absolutely no question about it. He'll be the first to twell you that. But, Brouwer is the kind of guy that hates himself for it. There could be any number of reasons he had a bad year, from his prior injury, adjusting to a new team, etc. The sheer fact that he's already skating tells me that he holds himself accountable and wants to do better.

He's fully capable of a bounce-back, and could easily play his way back up the lineup. I'm not saying start him in the Top 6 or anything, he definitely needs to earn that, but he's the kind of guy that absolutely hates not having an impact out there. Not to mention that he's still a great locker room guy.

Honestly, I was expecthing this article to crap all over the guy, but it's gotten a bit ridiculous. Brouwer can absolutely have a bounce-back year, and I think he will.

Edmonton fan here.

I think Calgary fans need to ease up on Brouwer a bit.

He seems to be a bit of a scapegoat, from the bit I have seen on Calgary and before he isn't as bad as many here are wont to make him.

I also think Bennet gets a long leash from the fans and giving him a free pass on that line is a bit bias.

Many players have troubles adjusting to a new team, city, and systems. As much as it pains me to say it I would be very surprised if Brouwer was not significantly better this year compared to last.

4.5mill per year is always going to be a bit more than he is ever going to bring to the table but for a FA that's just the way it works. Brouwer is also the kind of guy that will never be as flashy as say Bennet but can absolutely still be effective on a successful team... Like he was on St. Louis for years.

As far as Brouwer goes.....you are right about the FA part. $4.5 is high that is the price you pay on the open market. Looking at other contracts recently and even contracts handed out when he got his there are some doozies (Loui Eriksson) his contract is not far off. The biggest problem lies with a team who has made it a habit to get talent for bargain deals ( Brodie, monahan, backlund gaudreau etc...) and gets a player that underperforms makes it look that much worse. However saying that I do not think he is due for a bounce back season. Heart and soul grinders do not age well (Dustin brown) his underlying numbers haven't been impressive, he looks slow and out of place in the flames system. He was a Brian Burke special built for grit and toughness rather than for ability to play a system. He is a playoff hero who never showed up

As far as Bennett goes I don't think that he gets a free pass. Not many young skill players who get put with grinders and only get 3rd line mins excell. Bennett is an oddity. He has tons of skill but with the unexpected emergence of tkachuk there is not a great spot for him unless he's learns to play RW. As a C / LW he has to surpass gaudreau, monahan, tkachuk, backlund....a near impossible task. If Bennett had better linemates the rest of the league would have a much differently view of him. Flames fans who watch Bennett play realize how good this kid is and it breaks our heart how he is underutilized. Look at his performance in the playoffs against Anaheim that's is the type of player Bennett is. And can grow off of.

Maybe Brouwer should retire.
- BINGO!

Or develop some mysterious skin condition that requires him to sit on the IR for the last 2 years of his deal?

For two years I have been saying that they should be converting Bennett to play RW....of Ferland, Brouwer and Versteeg the best choice for that line is 'none of the above'.

https://www.google.ca/amp...-side-of-the-ice.amp.html

In my mind he can't play outside of the top six, and we all know that he isn't breaking into the top 2 lines at C or LW.

Makes this a no-brainer.

Hate to say but he is an unmovable object. I see the lines as follows:

Gaudreau/Monahan/Ferland
Janko/Backlund/Frolik
Tkachuk/Bennett/Brouwer
Stajan/Lazar/Versteeg

Unless someone steps up huge I can see the Flames starting with this. Brouwer will have a short leash & I can see assets thrown in to move him to Vegas or someone that can absorb the cap & Brouwer would be an upgrade on their lineup. Let's hope that line comes out of the gate smoking hot. Injuries will happen too & make decisions for GG as well.

Sad? Oilers fans are across the board are smarter than Flames fans. It shouldn't be sad, it should be expected.

"Horrible plan"

"Catastrophe"

You are talking about a guy who's scored 20 goals three times, with an 18 and 19 goal year mixed in. Not John Scott

Little hyperbolic eh?

let us know when this magical board shows up. My experience is that most Oiler fans are unwarranted arrogant rig pigs that like to discuss cock (Reveen for instance). Smarter is not a word that comes to mind when I think of Oiler fans.

Oh your experiences are not entirely innacurate, plenty of morons, for sure. But things need to be graded on a curve here, and no matter how bright a few of you are, your overall scores in regards to intelligence are brought down by BigErn4MVP,Fry and Razzledazzle. Youre pretty good most days, I wouldnt take it too personal.
