I believe with the bolded that is true with every stat I post. Advanced stats are bad, they're just numbers... it's how you (or anyone) analyze them and come to a conclusion that can be good or bad, strong or weak, etc.

I don't post them because I believe they are the end all be all. I post them because they are more data than just G, A, PTS to give a glimpse of a player in evaluation. I look at a LOT of numbers to come to any conclusion.

In regards to your last paragraph... I personally don't believe QoC is a "thing" because it tends to even out over 82 games. I've used Sid and Geno as an example here.. I have their top TOI opposition over last season at 5v5...

Do either one of them REALLY stick out as having played better competition? I think when you look at the numbers vs. players... it's VERY similar, not enough to make a difference in my opinion. Throughout a game, Sid and Geno are going to see all 3 pairings, not JUST the 1st pairing. Too many changes and variables to think that they ONLY see top pair D or not, etc.

Here's a couple articles on Qoc if you're interested. I've posted them before.

I can agree with and appreciate your first couple paragraphs.

Work's busy today, so I'll have to check out the articles later and just comment on the chart.

Something that really jumped out to me is how much higher the TOI was for the guys going against Sid as the guys against Malkin. If you take the names based on how they're ranked it's similar, but Sid is seeing those guys much more often. His whole list of 32 players are over 23 minutes, while Malkin has 11 total guys over 20. 7 of those guys are Capitals so clearly they are matching up on him, but other then that there's only a couple guys like Couturier and that shutdown beast Ron Hainsey who logged the same minutes against Malkin as the one's on Sid's list.

So I'd make a couple conclusions. First is other then the Caps and the Flyers teams aren't chasing matchups with Malkin like they do with Crosby. The second is they counted Hainsey's tine with the Pens accidentally because that's too weird. Maybe the articles will tell me something different when I read them (thanks for the links) but that's what I saw from the chart. Good example of what you said earlier about people interpreting the data differently.

Another thought is that chart might work better if it sorted by time on ice per game. It obviously weighs the data towards division and then conference foes by using total time. I randomly noticed Klefbom made Malkin's list so that was probably a chased matchup since they don't play often.

I think this is due to Malkin missing 20 games, which included some of those games where Sid saw certain teams multiple times. Just guessing though.

Yeah I'm not sure if that's an option for that. I usually use naturalstattrick.com if you ever want to go and look around. It's usually my go to. That and corsica.hockey (even though it's down right now.)
