I disagree. These kids, all of whom are representing themselves with their nations jersey, are a select few, of insanely talented kids who are trying to pursue hockey as their career. These kids live, eat, sleep, breathe hockey. The kids that go home for the summer, start drinking and partying with their buddies, and then get a taste of what "normal" 17/18 year old life would be like, they start to veer off the track a little bit. My family friend's kids are drafted to NHL clubs, both currently playing NCAA and WHL, and they are not only super talented kids (making the local papers, local news stations, etc), not only do they do everything hockey, but their parents own a business of 3v3 hockey on a mini rink, where both those boys spent 90% of their summers training. The crazy part is, for how talented these kids are to be drafted, they were both 5th/6th round picks in the NHL. While I get what you are saying, and that kids need/want time off, they are literally going home and training, hopping back on the ice, spending a bit of time with family, but essentially training to make it, because if they don't, their chances are even slimmer than before.

all in all, while I don't disagree time off is good for not just kids, but all professionally athletes, but these up and coming kids want to be playing hockey, they aren't being forced to play internationally, ever.

Its a couple years old now, but still rings true regarding the 24/7 hockey. Its one of a 5 part series that hits the nail on the head regarding parent's obsession with creating NHL stars, and the situation has got worse despite the spotlight on the issue
