I'd love to trade Buchnevich and Day for a legit number one center.
Buchnevich back issues and last years performance being unimpressive are the reason I'd let him go.
Day, I honestly don't think we need him now and if he can bring in our biggest problem solver, I'd trade him. - Efufoo
I think one day we really need to define who really fits that criteria
because the last time I think we had one that completely fits everybody's criteria about what a legit #1 center is, he wore #11 and brought us the Stanley Cup
if you can work out a trade of Buchnevich and Day for the next Messier, by all means, get on it hoss

Based on how you described both, who in their right mind would give up a #1 center for them? - airjan23
The same logic applies to those who think Staal is going to bring a good return.
"Take our player who has lost a step (and an eye) that we can't afford to buy out, and give us your best player on a good contract in return."

The other issue is if you acquire a "legit #1" what is going to guarantee that they produce/play that way after the trade or free agent signing? Richards was a legit #1 and his game fell apart in NY. Granted he was not the best age to be signed to that type of deal but he was coming off 91 and 77 point seasons with Dallas. He had plenty of teams willing to pay the salary he was commanding I'm sure. I was a big fan of Richards, I bought his Jersey the first season he was here and I was really let down by how it ultimately went down.
Unless you are acquiring a Crosby, McDavid, Malkin or some other player of that ilk, the possibility that you are paying or trading for someone that might not work out is high. It is not the best idea in a lot of cases. See past Rangers acquisitions if you are in doubt. To acquire a player like the above mentioned would be roster depleting if it was even possible to happen.
Also, you are not acquiring even a Duchene or similar for some spare parts and/or Marc Staal. If the Rangers could somehow even turn Staal into future considerations it would be a massive win. But it's just not happening.
Back to reality ...how many 18 yr old's go straight to NHL and do well ,hold there own... 1st thing you will hear said center is "How fast everything has gotten"
%'s show not many make the transition .. not re inventing the wheel here....
Staal : as much as bloggies knock and kick him ..(new G man) the guy is a pedigree who is still atop 4 in lg. we have him penciled as a # 5-6 ..
Toronto is still looking for a top 4 ..why they bought in Marleau ? any one 's guess
why wouldnt Staal goin a deal... Travel $$$ is all it will take & a team ready to compete...Tor is all of that + send them 1 top prospect out of pool & 1 draft pick
NYR gets Bozak & JVR... best deal i can find thats got reality built in...
both teams gain alot of what both needs now.....
Av's are a compelling deal for Dukey?..... Duche?could get him for a pkg of prospects & picks ...
either way if we see an 18 yr old looking lost out there on the ice ...
tell em Manny sent ya ..........................

this is the recipe for not winning the cup. Teams that consistently trade young talent for older players(however skilled those older players are) do not fare well.
We have ABSOLUTELY no idea how good Buch or Day could be. we have tried the trade young players for vets strategy - it doesnt work. why not let Gorton do his thing and slowly build a good team that can compete for a few years?

Turning Staal into a 7th in -19 would've been a massive win...

Staal would bring back a 7th round pick in '19. - Fenrir
Staal is owed 21.2 million left in cash on his deal
I think a team would only like to pay around 6 million total to have him, like Tampa did with Girardi over two years
unfortunately, the max on someone's contract a team can hang onto is 50%
maybe next summer, if he isn't bought out and his NMC turns into a 15 team NTC, and this year's ridiculous 6 million salary is paid, maybe a team would take his last 3 years at 50% and be willing to be on the hook for around 8 million in total salary that would be left over those 3 years.
He isn't going anywhere this year, time to move on. I am beggin' ya Dundee
