I don't think that's fair to insinuate that people want to trade Simmonds because they believe that all prospects will pan out.

I think the general consensus stems around the fact that a long-term (five to seven year) contract given to an 30+ veteran might come back to backfire on us three years after signing. Simmonds will get a long contract on his next deal, there is no doubt about it. There's a lot of risk there.

All that said, I still don't want to think about moving him until next season. But that's me personally.

I agree that his production towards the end won't be in line with the beginning. But I think that, when our window opens in 2-4 years, his production will be there, and he is the type of "over the top" player we'll need.

Provorov getting locked up long-term would be priority #1 for me.

I still say I'd rather move Giroux/Voracek before Simmonds, keeping in mind that the return for those 2 would be less than it would for Simmonds.

If Giroux is meh this year and Patrick shows to be a mature player then i might look to move Giroux first.

There will be tough decisions, no doubt. I just envision our team 4 years from now, going, "Man, if only we had a Wayne Simmonds type of player," and having to spend top prospects/picks to acquire Wayne Simmonds lite at 75% of Simmer's cap hit because everyone was too much of a wussy and worried that he may not be an 80-goal scorer until he's in a retirement home.

I like the guy but I do think you're overrating the player here a bit.

So you think he WILL score 80 goals at age 75?

Wayne Simmonds is not getting traded/signed/knighted/killed by a dragon until next summer, at the very earliest

If you aren't thinking numbers close to the Lucic contract then you aren't thinking clearly.
- ggunky

Lucic was 28 when he signed. Simmonds might $6mil per but he will not a 7 year deal.

I don't feel pressed to do anything with this team. We have the future 1C in the fold. Plenty of prospects in the fold. They are in a good position going forward. I think there will be more clarity with what to do with simmonds as his contract nears the end rather than the cloudiness as it stands today

If he puts up another 30 goal season?

I rule nothing out. I don't think 7 mil a season is out of the question.

That's possible. No longer than 4-5 years though.

I think people are overreacting on both sides tbh. Simmonds is a great guy and a tremendous player, especially on the PP.

Giroux has been a better player for longer and people are calling for his head. Someone suggests trading Simmonds and some people think it's the most ridiculous notion when in reality Simmonds is basically a better Schenn.

Ultimately, to win the cup. If we could get him for 5 years, even at a bit more than Oshie, I'm ok. At 8x8, see ya. Hexy has done fairly well but Jake had his best year in his contract year, was top 10 in scoring, led the league most of the year. He hasn't come close again and has what, 6 years left. If he and G rebound things will be cool. If they are not up to par the next two years, I don't see a big deal for Wayne.
Gotta say, I am so torn on this. I would love to see him close out his career here. I don't want to see a huge long term over pay for a very short window. It really depends in the end on what Hexy can get done with a fair deal for both sides.

- jaws1955

I don't feel Simmonds is a player that I would sign to an 8 year deal now, let alone in a couple of years. If he's adamant about that length of term, then you look to trade him.

Key word IF. How many contracts given to 31/32 year old wingers who play a power forwards game turn out to be worth it for 5/6 years at 6M?

and instead of 30 goals, he puts up 37 this year and 39 next year. What does that do?

8 x 8 baby.

Way to many variables over the next two years.
He is either gone next year at the draft or he gets the big extension. No short term deals and no tiny dollars.
Yeah, at least 35 mil next deal and that is only if he signs here for 5 years. 6-7-8 year deals bring him over 40 and could top 50 mil.

Career 50% CF and CFrel of -4ish%. G/60 he hovers 0.8-1. P/60 around 1.5.

5v5 he's rough. Clearly it's offset by his PP skill though.

As the Flyers become a better team, upgrade the talent, those numbers will change. Team numbers not player numbers.

Re-evaluate at the end of the 2019 season.

That is the most logical answer to all of this.

Patrick will be a RFA at the end of the 2020 season. Should the Flyers trade him now??
