because I am interested. wondering who is on this list that is many names long. it certainly seemed like a relevant question regarding today's discussion about Simmond's next contract

Why is there a need to list the obvious? Like I said, an objective and informed fan knows that there has been plenty of contract signed in that situation that have been successful.

Love my boi, Wayne, on and off ice. But there is no Flyer more overrated. People think this team would crumble without him. As opposed to these past glory years under his true captain material leadership. As a person, he's not easily replaceable. As a player, he's no doubt very good, but he's far from irreplaceable. He's a more likable, better intangibles Schenn.

Giroux and Voracek, who some would rather discard amazingly enough, have to have disaster seasons to produce at the consistent peak numbers of Simmonds. And they're already signed long-term and have far far less trade value. Having so much money tied up in potentially declining early-mid 30s players when we have so much young talent to pay and keep when we contend is concerning. I WISH we could restructure his construct tomorrow instead of wasting 2 cheap years, but we can't.

His biggest on-ice value is basically on the PP. Is it outlandish to wonder if that newfangled righty PWF we just drafted could play a variation of the Simmonds role on PP1 within the next couple years? Because we want a way to get him on there and not squeeze him out......and Giroux, Voracek, Ghost aren't going anywhere anytime soon. While one must be careful assuming kids can replace veterans, this monster prospect pool was assembled for a reason. I think the #2 pick isn't any ordinary prospect either.

The problem with this viewpoint is it doesn't look forward in looking at Simmonds as a player. As if he will never improve as a 5 on 5 player. It's the mind set of a lot of fans who are too focused on analytics. Why won't Simmonds improve as a 5 on 5 player when the team improves. When the talent is upgraded? That consideration is lacking in your premise. We also can't automatically assume that the prospects area given. If two years from now the situation shows that they have a surplus and the right move might be to trade Simmonds then so be it. I also chuckle at the notion of how easy some think replacing a 30 goal scorer is in this league. I don't care how the goals are scored. It's not. If it was, teams would have a lot more of them.

The idea of most advanced stats, right or wrong, is to evaluate how well does your team perform when you are on the ice. In other words, do you positively or negatively affect your teams performance.

Just because your team gets better doesn't mean that your advanced stats are going jump up, it also doesn't mean it's going to stay the same. The hypothesis would have to be tested.

You're missing something and that is how much does the players, opponents, and situations a player is playing with on the ice, affect those numbers. They're team numbers not individual numbers. As much as they think they can isolate a player from his teammates and opponents, they cannot. I think it's foolish to dismiss that the advanced stats for a quality player like Simmonds won't improve once the overall talent and ability of the team increases.
