The problem with this viewpoint is it doesn't look forward in looking at Simmonds as a player. As if he will never improve as a 5 on 5 player. It's the mind set of a lot of fans who are too focused on analytics. Why won't Simmonds improve as a 5 on 5 player when the team improves. When the talent is upgraded? That consideration is lacking in your premise. We also can't automatically assume that the prospects area given. If two years from now the situation shows that they have a surplus and the right move might be to trade Simmonds then so be it. I also chuckle at the notion of how easy some think replacing a 30 goal scorer is in this league. I don't care how the goals are scored. It's not. If it was, teams would have a lot more of them.

The idea of most advanced stats, right or wrong, is to evaluate how well does your team perform
when you are on the ice. In other words, do you positively or negatively affect your teams performance.
Just because your team gets better doesn't mean that your advanced stats are going jump up, it also doesn't mean it's going to stay the same. The hypothesis would have to be tested.
