Spielberg is literally the godfather of movie making. The Gretzky, the Ruth. No one else even comes close to his entire body (And range) of work. He's got a ton of sci-fi, schindlers list (whatever you want to call that), then humorous movies like catch me if you can, and a billion other things.
He doesn't have to be the best today. Dudes 70.

He gets too much credit. How many movies of his are considered classics because they were at the cutting edge of special effects? Go back and watch Jaws and Jurrisaic Park without nostalgia glasses. They don't hold up. They're fine movies, but with the shine of cutting edge special effects gone, the writing and plot doesn't hold up. E.T. holds up as a good feel good kids movie, but it's not like outrageously good as something like Toystory or Cubo which are legitimately awesome stories for all audiences.
I give Spielberg Saving Private Ryan, Shindler's List, and maybe Close Encounters of a Third Kind as legitimately great movies. Indiana Jones is an inconic character and the franchise which deserves mention, but besides that his body of work isn't as impressive as people claim it is. He's a top 10 director of all time, but it's understandable to keep him off of a top 5 of all time list, let a lone a top 5 favorite, which is what I had. |

I don't think that's fair. Everyone was splurging their pants over Avatar and hailing its greatness when in reality, it was just a retelling of cowboys vs. Indians with incredible visual effects. In 10 years, no one will care because the effects will be considered outdated. I think Jaws and JP have a lot more staying power than that. |

Looking at it today, it's so campy that it is. But the only reason it ever saw the light of day was because Stephen King called it "The most ferociously original horror film of 1982." That's when the offer from New Line Cinema came in. In 1982, it passed for legit horror. - jmatchett383
I love that it was made for like $10k in my parents backyard. |

I think JP holds up due to the practical effects. |

Avatar is a terrible movie plot and story wise and James Cameron is another wildly overrated director. Like I said, Jaws and JP are fine movies, but they're nothing special. I think comparing them to the Jackson's Lion the Which and the Wardeobe is more accurate than comparing them Avatar. |

How many other movies on the list are going to be crap once their special effects no longer stand out? You can't expect a guy to have 10 classics. 20 years from now I don't think Nolan has one stand out movie by that criteria. He has comic book movies and 2 movies (inception/interstellar) with huge plot holes. Those won't stand the test of time.
The other directors listed as great seem rather limited. Scorcese been great at gangster movies (Wolf of Wall St. counts as that) but doesn't have a broad library.

I didn't the The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe actually had great special effects, but they were worlds better than the old BBC version. Maybe Ender's Game would be a better comparison (for the record, I hated that movie because it could have been the book so easily).
So yes, I get what you're saying, but I could sit back and watch Jaws or JP and, while I may not be on the edge of my seat like when I first saw them, I still think they're better than 90% of the movies ever made.
Also, FWIW, I think movie effects (which is a large part of a director's job) have to be judged in the era in which they were made. |

Some of the stories about that whole shoot from If Chins Could Kill make me really appreciate what those guys did to make that movie. Have you ever been to the cabin site (which was turned into a brothel)? |

Scorsese. Every movie is a classic.
Edit for bold: Wait what? Gangs of New York, Aviator, Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, Shutter Island, Cape Fear?
Wolf of Wall Street is not a gangster movie. |

How do you feel about traditional horror vs. some stuff that is basically just censored snuff (A Serbian Movie/Audition)? I'm not going to watch a movie if its only basis is to make you feel sick to your stomach. Also, I'm not going to watch any of the Saw/Hostel movies, as they rely 100% on shock and gore. Rosemary's Baby is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen, and it's all done without any gore/shock. |

Rewatch the first two movies of the Dark Knight trilogy, The Presteige, Memento, and Dunkirk if you haven't seen Dunkirk. Those movies are by no means carried by effects.
EDIT: Also if you think Linklater, Tarantino, and the Coens don't have range, whatever man. |

Like the Human Centipede? (frank) that. I hated that poop. I saw the first one and it was horrifying and gross. Not a big fan of those. I did like the first Hostel because it was kind of original. I also liked Rob Zombie's Halloween series. Suspiria is pretty creepy. The 1st Paranormal Activity was good. Babadook was good. Conjuring. Exorcist. The Shining is one of my favorites ever. |

To your last point, that's why I'm critical of movies who are driven a lot on the back of effects. At some point, the effects will become dated and the movie will stop being special. The one "visually stunning" movie I can think of off the top of my head that has withstood the test of time as a legitimate great is Empire Strikes Back. I also think watchmen will do it in time. I'm sure there's plenty others, but just wanted to contrast Empire with Jaws/JP to show what I mean. |

Jaws invented the summer blockbuster movie. I don't know if I could go back and watch it (summer blockbusters as a whole don't age well), but it invented a genre. |

Mrs Wilson, how awesome Is It that The Pens Snagged Ryan Reaves? If It Were Me I Would Just Play Him Alongside Crosby And Watch Another Conner Sheary In the Making. Just A Way Better Version Of Shearys Pansy Ass. Ill Hang Up And listen To The Answer. P.s. If I Get Banned For Saying mrs. Wilson You Guys Really Need To Lighten Up. |

You can recognize that and respect that without claiming he's the best to ever do it. That's like claiming Elvis Presley is the greatest rock musician of all time. |

They also are not "CLASSICS". No one 50 years from now is going back to watch the Dark Knight. Dunkirk I have no idea how it will age I haven't seen it yet. I've heard some good things about it.
Never heard of Prestige so certainly its not a classic. I can't even get it to come up in google without adding film after it. So its not standing any time test today. |
