what's driving me crazy is people saying that trading Holden and his 1.6 million gives the Rangers enough cap space

if they trade Holden, they will replace him with a guy probably making 925k, so overall they will net 700k in cap space if they deal Holden away, even for a pick

unless people believe they'll go into season with 6 defenseman only, one of them being Marc Staal.

I think the team they have now is the one that starts the season. I think they will see how the 1st couple months go before they make another move.

I have posted this before, I truly believe we can trade Staal to Avalanche. Here is the deal: Rangers trade Staal and this yrs 2nd rounder for the rights to reigning Hobey Baker winner Will Butcher, who will become a FA in 2 weeks or so. Rangers retain $3mill in salary this yr, $2 mill next yr, $1mill 3rd yr, and none for final season. This is cheaper than a buy-out for Rangers, but similar effect.
Will Butcher doesn't even have to sign with Rangers and this is still a good deal. It clears cap space and a roster spot for someone like Bereglazof to join the team.
Colorado does this deal because they badly need defensemen, they have plenty of cap space and Sakic gets to save face by getting something for Butcher before he leaves as a FA for no return. With Rangers retaining salary, Staals contract not so bad looking.

i suppose the leafs could retain salary. but when you add in both teams are pushing up against the 50 contract limit, i agree that it seems like there are too many constraints for there to be any kind of trade.

I don't know dude, people keep dreaming up every crazy way they can to try and get rid of Marc Staal, ultimately ain't no way without buying the (frank)er out

most teams backups don't go 16-8-2. a .500 record by pavlec could leave you guys on the outside alone.

not to mention the bigger hole of trading away your 1C.

you guys could easily drop 8-10 points in the standings.

I like Holden's offense for a 3rd pair D and think he can be trained to be more defensively responsible. Remember, he is coming from the Avs, and has only played 4 years in the NHL. We can lock him up for a great price too, if he's interested in staying. Staal will be the most expensive 7th Dman in the league.

you are definitely the only person on the planet right now suggesting giving Nick Holden a contract extension, I'll give you that

Barring any big trades, like moving Miller or Skeji for a game changer, I agree.
Could we have anything to do with why Ryan Johansen hasn't been signed?

I can't see any scenario where Skjei would be moved. Realistic scenario, I should say.

I can't see any scenario where the Nashville Predators are waiting for the approval of the New York Rangers to sign Ryan Johansen

Your math is incorrect Jan. Rangers have to account for possible performance bonuses of Vesey and Deangelo of 3,25 million. They also only have 21 players on active roster so they will be adding at least one contract. They will be over the cap unless a move is made.

performance bonuses would be added to next year's cap, if those guys reach them

but, yes, the Rangers probably go into season with at least 23 players on active roster

He's 46th in Pts among Dmen, and tied for 21st in goals. Rangers didn't trade for him because he is crappy.

They refer to it as a sign and trade. Another team may be involved in the terms of his next contract due to an accepted trade. I think that's a pretty easy scenario to see.

hey, you know that the next "sign and trade" that happens in the NHL will be the very first time it has ever happened?

Actually the performance bonus does count against the cap if reached, if the bonus pushes the team over the cap that amount is added to the next year.

what's the difference then?

they either have the space this year or it gets pushed to next year

Awesome is your descriptive word, and Coaches scratch players not GMs. That still doesn't negate the stats I pointed out. And, he has 8 pts in 18 playoff games.

I think the point is, its not something to be worried about "this year".

I'm probably one of the bigger Holden supporters, but I really think they would need to see what they have in any of the youngsters before they even entertain the idea of an extension.
