I honestly think if Tim Murray had made the O'Reilly trade and only the O'Reilly trade, he would still be the general manager of the Buffalo Sabres today.
- buffalofan19

Maybe...
Defense would've still needed work last year

McCabe-Ristolainen.... McCabe would ideally be 2nd pair
Franson-Myers.... we'd need to upgrade this pair still big time
McNabb-Pysyk.... ugh, I wish this was our 3rd pair

And they would have had a lot more assets to work with as well.

For sure
Would've needed to make the right decisions with them though
Tough to say gmtm would've done any better if he'd waited to make moves

True... but why do u keep bringing Lehner into this?
I keep saying I didn't like the trade

The whole topic was based on Wetbandit saying we "needed a goalie".

My point was that we werent far along, and didnt need to trade a 1st for one.

We could have held off a year.

I think that's definitely possible, because Rochester would have had better teams last two years, and I think ROC is a huge reason he was fired

You're leaving out the part that is (- whatever cost it would have been to get the some other goalie)

The reason the cost for Lehner was what it was is because some other team (the full rumor is out there to determine exactly who) was willing to pay just a little less to get him. It isn't as if GMTM was the only guy in the league who was spending considerable coin to find a presumed starter

Anderson cost big; Schneider cost even bigger;

- Der Kaiser

Extreme example but as brought up before Greiss (cheap FA signing at the time) has produced similar or close to what Lehner has over the last two years.

Second bold is exactly my point though. Why did they have to pay that price for a guy who's value trade wise should be at the buy low level? Let that other team make that overpayment

Not saying i would have pushed for one of those bigger name goalies but those two were far more proven than lehner and at the time of their trades had significantly higher value.

He approached the lehner move like there was literally nothing else out there, short term or long term.

Couldn't u always say that though?
For example...
should we have tried to fix the defense this year?
It's not like we got some amazing talent
We could've just picked in the top10 again & potentially gotten another "core" player

How do u determine "when" you're ready to start trying to win?

I don't think that's true
He just really wanted Lehner
(Not that I agree with the trade)

thats mostly what i meant by that. He didnt have to get into that bidding war. He chose to on a guy whose value was rock bottom (relative to other years)

And while I agree with you,
Lehner was clearly the guy he wanted...
which is why he overpaid

It's gonna be interesting to see how he does this year
He didn't do as well in the 2nd half when we opened up the offense
Make or break year for Lehner

I think it made the most sense after we drafted Eichel, to wait another year, and then make big trades.

Reinhart wasnt a projected star when we drafted him, and we all knew we needed another big time peice after Jack.

There would have been another winger like Kane or another center like ROR, or another goalie like Lehner, available at another time. They were never once in a lifetime opportunities.

That's not to say they suck, but I would have taken my chances on drafting top 3 again.

Hell, if we for once lucked out and got to pick Matthews, we wouldnt need ROR. And wold still have Zadorov+ Compher

Again, it's all hypothetical, just my opinion. Not saying it would have for sure worked

This is the worrisome part, considering the approach theyve taken with the d-core

It's all pretty unlikely it would've worked out that we got Matthews
And that's with the knowledge of how things played out

Would've been even more uncertain at the time

And I don't agree that centers like O'Reilly are available whenever
Wingers at Kane's age & potential aren't moved all that frequently either

When the Lehner trade occured, Tomas Greiss had a grand total of 89 games played in 6 years do you remebmer the uproar about Lehner being unproven?

the difference here is you're paying little to no cost for Greiss compared to Lehner.

Its like the beaulieu move. if it works, amazing. if not, meh. The lehner trade not so much.

and im sying it can still be said that as of right now that pick has provided little or no benefit in comparison to what lehner has done

for now sure you could say that. I dont know what was available or what 21 was worth in a trade. Or more specifically white's ceiling. I just think the value was very rough for a team fresh off a tank job.
