He's not going to make the Sabres score 1+ more goals per game.
- Wetbandit1

no, but he'll score goals. the question isnt white or lehner. its white+some other goalie that didnt cost a 1st rounder or lehner.

Eh, One of these teams won 40 games last year. Not really comparable to the Avs
- sbroads24

Not sure what u mean?

My comparing Toronto to the AVs & Winnipeg was meant to say that the Leafs kinda caught lightning in a bottle with a nice group of young talent like the Jets & Colorado did a few years ago
Then they came back down to earth,
much like I believe a flawed Leafs team will

And those guys were acquired over EIGHT years of drafting
We we supposed to tank for that long?

We just as easily could've ended up with a Yakupov or Paajarvi as we could've another "core" piece

We had Eichel, Reinhart, O'Reilly & Kane
just bc it hasn't worked out yet,
doesn't mean that's not a good group of forwards to build around

In Edmonton,
Hall & Everle are already gone & RNH could be soon too
So idk how they were much farther along than us?

- jdfitz77

Well they made the second round of the playoffs this year. I don't know man they must have been ahead by some margin

The timing is also an issue with value. Its not like Lehner was coming off a breakout year.

In fact that summer most were talking about him being a decent low risk/buy low option.

even if you think as a gm that player is going to be great, why would you overpay when you dont really have to. That summer the other team mentioned with lehner was Edmonton. Was the drop at that time from Lehner to Talbot really that much? Like he paid this price as if there was literally no other goalie worth acquiring on the market.

- Sabresfan-365

Not that I like the trade...
but Lehner was the guy Murray wanted
So although I agree he gave up too much,
if Murray didn't like Talbot...
then it doesn't matter what he could've gotten him for

The comparison is moot unless gmtm liked BOTH guys
which we just don't know

If we didn't have Lehner we would have made a push for either Elliott (no thank you) or mason (strong no thank you)

I think it's safe to say that the MOVES the Oilers made in acquiring Talbot, Larson & Lucic... plus the GREAT play of McDavid & Draisaitl...

Are what got them into the 2nd round

Not RNH, Eberle & Hall

So again...
I really don't see how they were "ahead" of us

They just made moves that worked out quicker than ours
And we had A LOT go wrong for us last year

And maybe Petersen would've wanted to sign here if we didn't have Lehner?
Tough to say

Obviously this is all speculation

Lehner is decent...
but he's gonna need to become GOOD if he's gonna be our goalie the next 5+ years

You're leaving out the part that is (- whatever cost it would have been to get the some other goalie)

The reason the cost for Lehner was what it was is because some other team (the full rumor is out there to determine exactly who) was willing to pay just a little less to get him. It isn't as if GMTM was the only guy in the league who was spending considerable coin to find a presumed starter

Anderson cost big; Schneider cost even bigger;

At getting 1st overall picks. They had done nothing but get high picks with those guys before Jesus came along.

8 points in a year we tried our level best to lose. Yeah, light years ahead they were.

- Wetbandit1

So what you're saying is we purposely didnt have a good roster?

But a roster with RNH and Hall entering there primes werent further ahead?

Totally disagree.

I mean, they are a playoff team now. How are they not further ahead?

RNH
Poliout
Schultz
Yakupov
Klefbom
Draisaitl
Petry
Purcell

or

Risto
Reinhart
Ennis
Moulson
Gionta
Girgensons
Foligno
Flynn
Myers

I mean come on, it's not close

To theoretically get the lineup Edmonton had...
we'd have had to tank for FIVE more years

Is that really what you're suggesting we should've done?
NO F#CKING WAY

And over HALF those guys have nothing to do with the Oilers getting to the 2nd round this year

They are now. They weren't then. You know, when the trades happened. All those guys entering their primes finished 8 points ahead of a team trying to lose. That's not good.

No, not at all.

One more year. And we wouldnt have had to tank. Just stand pat and use our picks.

We still have no clue if we "need" Lehner. But we certainly did not need him when we acquired him.

Key word there. Not behind, not the same.

There best player also missed 30 games.

They were better, and better off going forward as they had the winning lotto ticket.

I was there 17ish years ago. It was pretty fun, some decent rollercoasters. Smelled like chocolate. Did the tour.

I never said we did "need" Lehner... did I?
I didn't like the trade either
I've been VERY clear on that

And in that "one more year" we could've just have easily gotten a "Yakupov" instead of a core piece

Trading for O'Reilly was a GREAT move... GREAT
Kane is debatable bc Bogo hasn't worked out,
but I'm still ok with it
We didn't give up a ton to get those guys

And if u are gonna say "1 more year" then u need to eliminate four years of Edmonton's players that u had on that list

No it would have gotten us Matthews (if we landed the 1st pick)

What's to say we would've?
Could've just as easily ended up with Dubois

Toronto was tanking hard that year
No reason to think we'd have been worse

So....
Since getting Matthews was very unlikely
Yeah,
I'd rather have O'Reilly & Kane than what we have up for them

You're right, there is no way to know.

Just like you can't definitely tell me Kane and Lehner will be on this roster one year from now.

I don't blame people for liking the ROR trade. He's a helluva player. It's just my opinion that I would've waited a year to make big moves

I keep saying I didn't like the trade

I honestly think if Tim Murray had made the O'Reilly trade and only the O'Reilly trade, he would still be the general manager of the Buffalo Sabres today.
