Ok, here's a hockey story. Does anyone remember Link Gaetz? From Vancouver and was drafted 40th overall by North Stars solely to protect Mike Modano? Linden's draft too.

He got those black eyes the night before the draft while celebrating. I met a guy who was there

Without question Gagner should wear #89. Mogilny was a no show most of his Canuck career and will never even be in the ring of honor let alone Jersey retirement. People were wearing #10 before Bures number was retired anyway so I don't see the issue. Bure was a much better more impactful player then Mogilny, obviously Bure is 3rd all time in Goals per game ratio only behind Mario Lemiuex and Mike Bossy, and that in the dead puck era.

I agree the money issue between NHL and AHL is humbling. He could be making $1.7M this season in the NHL or $70,000 in the AHL. But in reality $70,000 is a hell of a wage for a 20 year old.

Tangent: This is the problem with the fantasy world that these huge pro contracts have created. It makes it hard for me to feel any sorrow for these kids when they make more at the bottom of their pay scale than most Canadians earn.

I recently met this ex pro player who 20 years ago was making $75,000 as a fighter in the minors. He said he was more than happy to play in the minors at that pay scale and not work too hard for it. It got me thinking about players that have the skill to be in the NHL but maybe not the drive to do it.

I think the wage part is humbling in that everyone else around him in his draft year will be looking at massive raises whereas he will be looking at a paycut. Ehlers and Nylander will be rolling in at minimum $3.5m, whereas JV will find himself on a 2-way deal for less than $1m - that'll hurt to see from his perspective

I agree with your tangent. No sympathy from me. Its a dedicated lifestyle to excel, but some can get by without the hard work. Those that slack can sometimes be NHLers and most end up in a minor league somewhere, living the dream as they say

Drama/comedy at the ASL homestead today. Woke up to a message from the EX gf "come and pick some raspberries if you want" so I do, less than an hr home and the RCMP pull up "we've had a complaint that you were trespassing earlier" I invite the gentleman into the house to listen to the phone message, he left laughing.

I'm going to savour these berries.

I agree and have had similar thoughts in the past about the drive of certain people (even more so when they're making north of $250k to play in the AHL).
Not throwing any shade (sorry Makita), i'm just saying that making that kinda cash to play a game might be enough for some folk.

Surely there has to be an easier way to get some raspberries.

Saw on TSN that Garth Snow offered Hamonic, Top Prospect and their 1st round pick in 2017 for Duchene. Sakic said he wanted more. I think Duchene is a good player, but nothing more than a good player. Sakic is driving that team into the ground.

But its no secret Hamonic wanted to play in Western Canada. Not that his contract gave him that right but it sounds like Snow was willing to compromise a bit... who knows?!

Sakic seems hell bent on getting 4 players for Duchesne. Sakic was an unreal player but he is an unmitigated disaster as a GM.

I have had a few drinks with Jake in yaletown. He is a nice kid....just into chicks and drinking more than hockey unfortunately. Let's hope his humbling year in Utica has changed him
