I thought it was always the opposite.

Longer term less dollars.

- mdw7413

In theory, Zib would have probably signed in the $4 million range has he signed a 1/2-year deal. So by signing a longer term contract, the Rangers are paying a higher market value in his younger years, but are also saving on the older years of the contract. This is all based on the assumption that Z would have been able to get more on the open market as a UFA after a 1/2-year deal (and especially so if he lights it up in either of those years).

You are being purposefully miserable. That's really the only way to explain it. Either that, or you've killed some brain cells, and I don't think that's happened.
- Pete V

No. They had to discuss a contract before both sides they wanted a hearing. The Rangers just signed Z to the exact cap hit he asked for. Why wait this long. He's signed. Good. It's eat up UFA years and takes him to age 29, good for the team and player.

Yeah thats true. Hopefully he isn't comfortable about the 5 years and really works his ass off. Wonder if any NMC/NTC is involved in this.

I hope the guy who wrote this isn't the same guy who wrote Hayes's playoff article.

Full NMC with a no-buyout-clause and a guarantee that in year 3 of the deal his cap hit will actually triple for literally no reason at all

Yeah right. A red state like that would never let someone with his last name come there.

There's a lot more to negotiate than just term and money. No trade clauses, signing bonuses, salary structure are all equally important.
