You know what's a really fun exercise?
Spend a few hours typing a tradelist of cards. Stop after you've listed all of your 05/06 cards, and then talk about your 2005 Honda Civic. - jmatchett383

Hakstol had nothing to fear the last few years. He and Hextall are probably safe until 2020 when the pipeline of prospects should be showing their worth in the NHL. Until then it was a clean slate for them.
Of course that won't sit well with the impatient must always win now fans of this fan base. - dragonoffrost
Absolutely. They just won in 75. The impatience of this spoiled fan base is too much to take. |

Those are not mutually exclusive, he could have taken Lehtera for both reasons - to make the deal work and because he liked him as a bottom six player for two seasons. We all know Hextall likes to make rookies earn their spots, so maybe his plan was to bring in another center during this offseason. Two birds, one stone type thing. That is just a hunch.
FWIW, I think Schenn's trade wasn't extra value, I think a top 6 forward who can score 25/25/50 + in his prime, signed to a reasonable contract for length is worth 2 higher first round picks. I think Hextall could have gotten a comparable trade from another team. - VladDrag

The win now mode didn't work since 1975 so Hextall got the powers that ran the team to change that directive only a few years ago to one of draft and develop. They need to be able to truly implement that strategy. Sorry that doesn't happen in 2 years. So sit back and trust the process...
Oh wait let's still blame the new guy for the old guy's failure that caused the new guy to get the job. That's so much more constructive. |

Nobody wants Matt Reid, including the flyers. Waive and then buy out is the only way out. - joegreif17
He is in the last year of his contract. No reason for a buy out. |

Why hasn't it worked since 1975? Majority of that time the league had no salary cap. Wouldn't a large market team have an advantage over a good % of the League? |

To be honest I do not care what they do with him as long as he never hits the ice. If cap space is available to hide him then do it but finding a team to take on a player like Matt Reid will be extremely difficult unless General George wants him. Have you seen how bad he is the last couple years, undeserving of a roster spot imo - joegreif17
His scoring is way down but he is still a solid player away from the puck and could help a team as a role player. Flyers probably will have to retain some salary to move him. |

The Flyers had one of the best regular season winning percentages in the league during the 1975-2004 period partly because of that advantage. By the time you get to the last two rounds of the playoffs payroll is much less of an advantage. Edmonton in 87, Detroit in 97 and Tampa in 2004 all had rosters that were as least as good as the Flyers. |

So, by your logic, no rookie can ever come in and succeed?
Patrick was the 2nd overall pick and put up good numbers while playing the entire season injured. Lindblom was arguably the best player in the 3rd best pro league in the world playing against grown men. These aren't a couple of undrafted nobodies just being plugged in with fingers crossed, these are top notch, highly regarded by all scouts, prospects. Every player has to be a rookie at some point. - BiggE

No need to keep bringing up the failed Schenn as center experiment. - Feanor
I didn't. I had Simmonds at LW in mind. |

Or a lot of people when you don't name who you are thinking of automatically default to the tendency of past posts.
I know I fall into that trap every now and then. |

Exactly... long playoff runs are based on health of the team at that point really. But we can't let that get in the way of a false narrative.
I can definitely say the Kerr and Lindros injuries probably stopped two cup wins. |

I am going to say it.
Couturier will score 18-20 goals and 35-37 assists and play 79 games. - J35Bacher
I think those numbers could be possible if he replaces Schenn on PP1. Get some of those dirty area goals. |

So, Michael Phelps raced a great white shark.
Don't know the outcome, but if you could actually convince the shark to swim as fast as he could, there's no way a human could swim faster than a great white. |
