Yeah, that to me was an under valuing by the Caps.

Schenn and Johannson were similar players last season, almost identical possession stats.

But, Schenn is younger, and has one more year on his deal. Also, Johansson shot at 18%, which is 4% higher than any other season. Is it possible it stays up there, sure, but I don't think it will. Schenn has also had 2 years of 50+ points, while Johannson destroyed his point total this year by 11 points.

The Caps also got a 2nd and 3rd in the 2018 draft, which is supposed to be a better draft. Still to me, it's not enough. I don't think the Caps were in trouble in the cap?

One major difference with each trade...

Flyers cleared 425k of cap space and the Caps cleared 4.6 million

You're probably right. Instead of calling teams and gauging interest, Hexy probably just drew St. Louis' name from a hat and offered to gift them Schenn for the low price of 2 1st rounders.
- jmatchett383

I don't believe anything I wrote implied that, certainly that wasn't my point.

I think he probably could have gotten similar value from another team. Maybe he couldn't have. To be honest, my view of trades is pretty limited.

Also, this was during the draft, so they probably had about 10mins to decide, which puts pressure on both teams. Hexy identified a player wanted in the draft, and spoke with STL and they said yes. I don't know if Hexy had time to call all other teams.

I don't know what that means. Do you think they only offered him to NJ and just took whatever the Devils would agree to?

Without cap coming into play (which I know is a huge part of trades), I think that he is worth more than a 2nd and 3rd round pick.

That is what I mean.

The way I understood things is that Stl. Called Hexy with the offer. Said he hadn't been shopping Schenn. These trade calls can start at either end.

Just realized that Vegas signed sort of former Flyer Tomas Hyka. Interested to see if he can eventually make the NHL.

I said Read to bring up Bemidji State tbh, but I still think there will be enough space for someone like him

Devils are another team that has space on both the roster and on the cap

Nobody wants Matt Reid, including the flyers. Waive and then buy out is the only way out.

Good ol' Tommy Hyka.

We'll always have that one rookie game where he scored that time.

Trivia: The record for most assists by a rookie is 70 and is shared by 2 players (Gretzky was not considered a rookie). One of them is Peter Stastny. Can you name the other player (without Google)?

He is not good enough to make the team and nobody has any interest in a player making 3.625 million against the cap. Unless somebody trades for him the only way to reduce cap is buy out or bury him in the ahl at the expense of future players.

But a team might have interest if it's only half.

They will be able to retain money and move Read if they want to. No reason to buy him out and keep a dead cap hit on the books next year.

Okay. So you think retaining 1/6 of his salary as dead space next year is a better move than just letting the contract expire after this year? If you want to waive him to save ~$1M, fine. But there is no reason to buy him out, they don't need the extra space.

Off topic here but I think many of us are really going to miss Brayden Schenn. Considering how many late round first round picks are busts this trade has the potential to be a real devastating blow to the flyers. I think Schenn will set career highs this year and I certainly wish him all the best. Yes he had slumps in Philly but what about Claude and Jake, it was a bad year. I loved the way Schenn competed all the time even when he was not scoring.

Long time reader, first time poster. Thanks for all the fantastic summer reads and insights Bill. Truly a highlight of the day to read some great in-depth Flyers news, in the summertime no less.

One question that I keep thinking (not related to this article), with G's and Voracek's decline in production, why isn't Hakstol more and more on the hot seat? Albeit he has to make due with the players he has, and can only surround Giroux with what he has available, but maybe he's coaching style is... does Hak go after this season if we under perform. I know he was brought in as a great coach for the younger players, but is he failing the older ones?

I think Patrick, Weal, Lindblom, and further growth of TK can help ease the pain. Not just for this year specifically

To be honest I do not care what they do with him as long as he never hits the ice. If cap space is available to hide him then do it but finding a team to take on a player like Matt Reid will be extremely difficult unless General George wants him. Have you seen how bad he is the last couple years, undeserving of a roster spot imo

Gonna go totally out on a limb here, and I didn't look it up.

Joe Juneau? I know he was a big assist guy and IIRC, he had a huge rookie season.

I think this is a year where Hak has to show what he's made of. I don't think it's a mandate to make the playoffs, but he's got to show that he can handle this roster and get more production from its top players. If he can't get everyone on the same page, it might be time for a change.

I am not a Hakstol fan, but I'll support him and hope for the best while he's the coach.
