It's ridiculous. He doesn't HAVE to be the captain. AO wasn't until he was 24. I get the circumstances are a bit different here with ROR expected to be here for the duration. But the NHL captain's importance is so overblown. Teams with multiple players that could be captain do just fine. They've only won the last like 10 Cups.

Why not Evan Rodrigues he knows what Jack is going to do with the puck as well as anybody else on the team, his one year with Jack earned him his NHL contract, Plus he will help on the defensive side of things as well.

Toews is the captain so that's your franchise player

Then you have Tyler Seguin who was not a franchise player at the time and he wasn't going to beat out a HOF player
