That's not true though, is it?

Phelps vs Shark drew 4.78 million viewers
http://tvbythenumbers.zap...ble-ratings-july-23-2017/

The last two Hawks series both had over 8 million viewers in one of their games, plus averaged 5.5 and 5.7 million for the series.

http://nbcsportsgrouppres...d-most-watched-on-record/
https://sportstvratings.c...-6-overnight-rating/2787/

There are several playoff games a year that get around $4.5+ million viewers. Even the most boring final ever (2012 Kings v Devils) had their game 6 reach 4.9 million.

So that means there were 4.78 million people hoping to see him get eaten by a shark

Come on, 4.2 vs 4.7 or what ever it was....
- riozzo

4.2 what? 4.2 was not mentioned. No matter if it's a valid point, the starting point was silly and wrong because 3 games in 2017 final outperformed the gimmick, two of which by a good margin. I like being exact. Why muck up a generally good argument about mishandling of NHL promotion/marketing/exposure to new audience with misinformation that is a quick wiki check from being exposed?

I would argue the growth happened because you had original six teams - big markets - win the cup four times since 2010. Hawks three times and Boston once. Add Detroit in 2008 for five in last ten years.

Feed the big markets and you see real growth.

- Return of the Roar

The counter argument was only one Canadian team made the finals since 2010.

Growth in revenue is much more complicated and diverse than viewership.

First, you said "out drew ANY game of the NHL Stanley Cup Final." If you meant 2017, you should specify. Second, it's still not true.

Phelps vs Shark drew 4.78 million while the 2017 final had 3 games get more than that. The average for the whole series was just under, but you said any game, not average so.

Game 1 - 4.9 million viewers

http://www.sportsmediawat...third-best-game-one-1999/

Game 4 - 5.7 million viewers

http://www.sportsmediawat...dience-stanley-cup-final/

Game 6 - 7.0 million viewers

Thanks for getting technical

I went off a tweet from Darren Rovell who's job is tracking this sort of crap. Blame him.

Point is NHL ratings suck.

Ah, there is your mistake - you misquoted someone else. Average for a series is not the same as "out drew any game of the NHL Stanley Cup Final". So what Rovell said was true; what you said was not.

Well, Rovell is somewhat right - that 4.762 number does not include streaming.

It would never work again either because of how mad people were about it - they tuned in stupidly on the off chance there was a real shark and it was all disappointment after that. It was a one-hit wonder show that is a weird basis to start complaining, albeit rightfully, about the NHL's lack of good marketing or whatever.
- L_B_R

It's proving that something as stupid as a race between a shark and a human can out draw......wait for it..............the AVERAGE rating for the 2017 Stanley Cup Final. Gimmick, stupid, etc....doesn't matter.......it out drew the NHL. Just like many stupid things do on a regular basis, starting off with the WWE.

I love hockey, but I'm not going to get defensive about how badly the league is run, and how every CBA there is a lockout because the league is truly a disaster. In the past 30 years, how many lockouts/strikes/seasons lost has MLB, NBA, and NFL had vs the NHL

I believe it was 94 when Baseball ended in August....I can think of 3 NHL strikes/lock outs, 1 of which cost them an entire season....NFL has had 2 to my knowledge, and I could care less about the NBA

When I'm wrong, it's no skin off my back to acknowledge it and roll with it. The thing I like about boards like this is different knowledge, so it's totally cool if someone is like "it's really this, not this". Can't learn anything any other way.

You could have just said provided the tweet like you did later when I first commented, too. Would have been pretty clear then you'd just misread/misremembered it. That happens to everyone, myself included.

its amazing how the rule changes impact on ice conduct. You can see early on Keenan sending out a bunch more of his "tuff" guys as the fights escalate. He'd get 20 games for that now...

Second City Hockey's analysis on the Prospect Camp.

https://www.secondcityhoc...-debrincat-chad-krys-2017

"Alex DeBrincat
This is the guy everybody is excited about. DeBrincat is widely considered to be Chicago’s top prospect. During drills he looked okay, but we didn’t see him do anything special. That can be a solid indicator for a lesser prospect, for somebody of DeBrincat’s caliber it doesn’t tell anything. He stood out in the 3-on-3 sessions that were held during drills throughout the week.

But his talent was on display during Friday’s scrimmage. He was patient with the puck and made pinpoint passes. He was with Sikura and Highmore for many shifts, and they were dominant, led by Sikura and Debrincat. Debrincat certainly has the speed, vision, and skill to go along with that hockey sense that puts him in the right place much of the time as well. His size is the question for everybody, but he definitely held his own during the scrimmage while battling bigger defensemen along the boards. It would be best for him to start at Rockford for his first year of professional hockey."

Let's not forget Manson... when he got that look in his eyes, look out. Best fight I ever saw was when Manson called Stevens out to center ice and gave him a beat down!!

Thanks for sharing that analysis of DeBrincat's showing during the scrimmage. One thing I am gathering is that DeBrincat needs to play with a playmaker who can dish the puck in order to optimize his skills as a finisher. Sikura seems like more of a playmaker with some finishing touch and could possibly be like Schmaltz where he has a great shot but prefers to pass 9 times out of 10. And Highmore is your bulldog grinder with some offensive skills to boot; a lot of pictures I see of him in action he has this "that puck is mine" expression on his face.

This is all potential of course so we'll have to wait and see how they ultimately develop and hopefully earn spots on the Hawks in years to come.

Im pretty close to last in line to defend the NHL...Forget the shark and Phelps, the NBA Draft Lottery show has outdrawn Cup Final games.

But NHL playoffs goes on for months and only the die hards stick around and watch after their teams are out in the opening round.

Bettman made a choice as did the owners and went for more money and took the NHL off ESPN....It wasn't the other way around as many think.

Once that happened there were many reasons for the NHL to not get the nightly exposure on ESPN....How much did that hurt in the long run and was it worth moving for the difference in money?

Hmmm - can't assume a double play - and can't assume a pennant.

Seems that Rein-horn were the loudest voices among the owners in calling for a stoppage.

That clown Thomas shot his yap off about scab laborers and then the press called him on using them to build his hotel sized mansion which was going up at the time. I don't know if he was playing stupid or was just a moron but the more lip service he gave the more arrogant he sounded. I refused to go to the ballpark until he was gone. From 1994-2006. That ass wanted a huge contract at the end of his career and he couldn't bend over to pick up a grounder. Guy's an bumhole. And so are the people that are responsible for that strike/lockout. I know it's a business, but it was my recreation after busy hockey seasons.

Congrats on the Cubs World Series victory last year. My little boycott of Sox games took a lot of wind out of my sails regarding the Sox/Cubs and baseball in general. But I'd be a liar if I denied laughing when the Indians hitter homered off Chapman in the last game. I'd love to see a crosstown world series, but I'd wear my hockey pads if I went to a game or bar.

And the Sox had the 1994 series in the bag. In the bag I tell ya.
