Instigators are talking about the next CBA negotiations and Rivet brought up that owners will be looking to get rid of guaranteed contracts. I wonder if players would agree to that if they were allowed opt-out clauses for performance. A contract is only guaranteed if the player hits a certain threshold.

Let's take a Sam Reinhart for example:

His contract is guaranteed for 40-60 points.

If he scores under 40, the team can terminate his contract

If he scores over 60, he can renegotiate and if they can't agree on a raise, they go to an arbitrator. If they can't agree, he becomes a UFA

So I kind of like that. You hear a lot of overpaying, getting a steal of a price for a player so I like that idea. I think it keeps the players motivated to produce to their best level. The one downside will be the players saying something like "my average ice time was 10 mins a game, if it was 12 I would have reached the higher level for more money." I also like the fact that teams wont be "back paying" for a guy that way over produced on his old contact (seem to hear it more in NFL), so you are not overpaying a guy just because of past performance. Interesting idea, that will take a while to "get right" but I do like the basics of it.

Any rules or changes that make more trades and FA's are good changes

Yeah, idk if they would want the range negotiable at the time of the contract signing, or if it would be a range of 30% +/- off the player's average. I think it's a system that could benefit basically all the players. The ice time thing is tricky because there's no perfect metric to determine that, but maybe someone smarter than me could figure it out

I'd also like them to get rid of the games being played with dead money (Nathan Horton, Pronger, even McCormick). If the player's career is over, give them the money and move on.

There should also be a clause that if both parties agree to end a contract, they can. I'm thinking of Luongo in Vancouver. He was stuck there because of his contract and even he said he would terminate it if he could. Why not at least give the option, even if it would be rarely used?

Without over analyzing that, I think I do that. To me Fantasy Football is all about depth for when a player gets hurt. Getting all those picks to move up 6 rounds each (minus the first rounder of course). Maybe you counter with the 5th rounder being a 3rd rounder?
