I read a book that dealt with Mikita's life. He lived a hard life as a young guy. Was born in Slovakia. Was an Immigrant. Young life had chip on his shoulder. As young hockey player was constantly aggressive. Changed on a dime winning Lady Byngs.

....And beisdes being an elite player a very tough, mean SOB in his younger days....Ted Lindsay helped Mikita by showing him how to get even with bigger guys.
Mikita could give you a shave with his stick...

Stan was the best I ever saw at sliding the butt end of the stick up through his glove in an opponents ribs (or throat) along the boards. They just do not teach that anymore.

Powers:

Sikura just scored to end a 3-on-3 scrimmage. In my opinion, he's been the most impressive forward so far in the camp.

Ah... interesting how popular an Old Fashions has become. Wasn't at all with anyone under 50-60 when I was growing up now my 28 yr old and his girl friend and good friends drink them often.

Until he "got religion" and became a perrennial Lady Bing candidate (and winner).

Hope he's in a good place these days....

Yep...Huge turnaround.
Unfortunately, I think all of his hockey memories are gone. Very sad..

Ehhh, maybe, but Keith has worked to become as strong as he can be at his size and frame. When he came up he was like 170 and today he is a rock solid 190-195. Still gets manhandled by 220 pounders but that is sheer mass—or as Kevin Bieksa once said of Dustin Byfuglien, like trying to handle "270 pounds of loose meat."

There is only so much size/mass that a guy like Schmaltz can or should even try to add.

Most top trainers I think will agree, it's all about functional strength, ie strength that enables you to do more athletically. A guy can be weight room strong, dead lift and bench a house, but can't climb a rope or do a pullup or sprint 50 yards. Byut a guy like Keith has added significant strength in a range of meaningful, funcational areas and its made him a premier player.

Looking at Schmaltz' pic, it's hard to imagine he's functionally very strong at all. I mean he looks like a kid who plays a lot of hockey and never trains otherwise, honestly. Hopefully he's gotten a bit more serious the last couple of months. Big opportunity for him this year, and his talent will not be fully realized in the NHL until he does.

Ok JJ, I'll drop out of this conversation except to agree with the bolded and leave it at that.

I bet there has been more brown liquor sold in the last 5 years than in the preceeding 8-10 years.

There's not really a study that shows just CF% peak/progression, I don't think. Most studies originally focused on point production, like this one that says common peak years are24-27, though elite players can go a few years longer (this is pre-lockout data but it holds today): http://hockeyfamilyadviso...yers-peak-hockey-metrics/

Some of the stats guys who focus on GAR/WAR believe a forwards' peak is between 23-26, but there's not a lot of data differentiating between high and low end forwards. I'm not sold on GAR/WAR as individual stats that can assess a player, either.

- L_B_R

Thanks, LBR. Interested to see what the fancy stat community comes up with as far as when the regression generally starts in a fancy stat context.

It almost looks like they put all the small guys in white and big guys in red.

I always found it interesting what players were grouped together in drills, on lines or in scrimages.

Creatine is not on the USADA list, however, its amazing how many common prescribed items are on the list.

This stuff works for all you youngsters watching out there!! Speeds up the healing process so the next time you hit that body part the tissue is healed and ready to be broken down again........ Was scared to try it and made an appointment to see my internal medicine Dr who is a muscle bound beast. He said it's safe to use.

When I first saw Keith without gear on about 10 years ago he reminded of a JV HS wrestler...He had a small frame and his ankles were not thick. Keith was a slightly built kid who would run around drinking protein shakes after a workout.

I thnk Keith trained to develop his body as hockey player for a long time before anyone heard of Duncan Keith. I recall he did a lot of plyometrics training, more soccer like-Looking to build streghth, explosiveness and quickness.
But that was while was very young, probably before his teen age years. Keith had a plan because he knew his frame and ability to add on mass was limited otherwise he would lose his biggest asset-quickness.

Schmaltz will do whatever Paul Goodman tells him at this point. Goodman doesn't get enough credit and was a great find for the Hawks. It will be a question of how long it takes but Schmaltz will be monitored very closely as well as other young players.

- Al

I know one can make an argument about the athletes of any sport, but I find soccer players to be the most well conditioned athletes and the total package as far as cardio, core strength, lean muscle, conditioning, etc. So if Keith did in fact train like how a soccer player would, it's not surprising the results he got in terms of his off-the-charts endurance, agility, and strength for a guy his size.

It's funny because when ESPN went out and ranked toughest team sports which included rating power, endurance, speed, and agility, etc ... hockey rated as the most difficult team sport -so maybe soccer players ought to be training like hockey players.

IMHO, the toughest team sport to actually play is ice hockey because I heard someone say that you have to actually excel at 2 sports: ice skating and hockey.

Not sure if this is just in jest or if there is an air of seriousness with McDonough's comment about Soupy (I assume that comment is about Campbell).

Mark Lazerus‏Verified account @MarkLazerus

McDonough mentions how Luc Robitaille became president of the Kings. "There's a very good chance today I hired my replacement."

Really excited to see Alex Fortin line up on the second or third line in the preseason. I know and don't want him to stay there... much rather have E Kane. But I like Fortin's game. Maybe he can square up good with Kane on his off wing.

Creatine has been around for a long long time. The key, DRINK LOTS OF WATER. Creatine promotes a lot of water retention which in turn helps recovery. It's a muscle endurance aid along with recovery, but make you look "puffy"

All in all, extremely safe as its not really used for muscle growth, more muscle repair/endurance
