It's Saturday actually, so it's fair game. But I would never tell BiggE to shove his comment up his tuchus early on a Sunday. That's plain rude. I'd at least wait until 2pm.

Still laugh at people who think it wasn't a bad deal. The only positive is it was off the books quicker. However, Hartnell was by far more productive. In the two years of Umberger before the buyout, Hartnell had 51 goals and 109 points, Umberger 11 goals and 26 points. But he played a structured game so points don't matter.

Well Columbus ended up with with a bigger/longer buy out and more incentive to sweeten an expansion draft deal with Vegas to keep them away from quality forwards they couldnt protect.

From a hockey stand point, there is no comparison..Hartwell is and was the far better hockey player. However, the deal fit Hextall''s clean up plans pretty nicely.

Hartnell''s contributions clearly were not of much value to Columbus considering they were trying to trade him a year before finally buying him out.

I agree. Hextall has figured out that he can't evaluate talent which is he hasn't made a real trade that wasn't just for more picks or prospects since the Hartnell deal. I think he really thought it was a good trade and was shocked at how bad R.J. was. Now he's just treading water hoping to get paid as long as he can before everyone realizes that he's clueless.

I've been saying for some time......our amateur scouting might be the best in the business under Hextall's directive. But our pro scouting/evaluating is not up to that standard, whether that's him or the pro scouts or more likely both. Especially as we move towards bigger trades and a bigger FA signing or two in the next handful of years, that area needs work. Too many times repeating the same mistakes. This isn't amateur -- there is too much info available and less/no projection.

I have nothing against R.J. Umberger in this regard: Professional sports is a tough business. Your body accumulates hard miles and you are lucky if you are still playing in the four major sports into your 30s.

Players will always try to play. Always. They don't get to the highest leagues by being quitters, by thinking that the next game won't be better than the last one.

Sometimes, it's up to the teams and coaches to take the ball away from the player -- it isn't always easy or pleasant. But sometimes, because it is professional sports, you have to stop putting players in a position to fail.

I didn't think Chief was a bad coach for the Flyers. Others might disagree.

But I strongly disagreed with the position he put Umberger in -- Umberger might resurrect his career in Dallas. I don't know. But I know that he was clearly and largely ineffective as a Flyer, and the coach and management did him no favors in running him out there that second season for 60-plus games where he contributed little-to-nothing, then shutting him down and explaining that the player was hurt.

I mean, come on. That was ridiculous then, and it's ridiculous now. Sometimes, you have to take the ball away from a player. That didn't happen with Umberger, and it's unfortunate, because it does unfairly color how some view his tenure with the Flyers

Well said and I agree strongly regarding the player injury view. These guys are pros. They didn't get here by quitting and missing games. A lot of times the organization has to step up and do whats best for the player.

I agree. On a pro level the organization is still a few years behind the trend in my opinion. Valuing certain types of players a bit more highly than they should. Hopefully this is still evolving under Hextall.

Buyout rules need to be changed. You buy someone out, there done, off the books ! This kind of stupid rules prevents possible acquisitions of a player, and that makes no sense. So what, a team took a chance on someone and it didnt work out. Lets make it even dumber..If a team has to carry that money against the cap, from a buyout, for years, than the player cant play elsewhere for years.

This is why the rule is like It is. Because teams like the Flyers tried to spend their way to a cup. It isn't a hard cap if you can buy the player out with no cap penalty. LTIR covers injuries but no relief if you make a mistake and the player just sucks.

I loved Hartnell and liked Umberger.
I remember when the trade was made there had been talk by Hextall about the need for the Flyers to get faster.
Personally, I remember thinking that Hartnell seemed even slower in the playoffs when the pace of the game picked up. His last year in Philly he put up 0 goals and 3 assists in 7 games. Last year in Columbus he put up 0 points in 4 games. I know there's other ways to contribute besides scoring goals, but he's not a defensive specialist and he's paid like a goal scorer.

Edit: WAS paid like a goal scorer. Now he's being paid not to play for the team, just like Umberger.

Plus if there was no penalty, there would be nothing to stop a team from just loading up on FA's with 7 year, 14 million dollar deals and saying "wink, wink, we'll buy you out after year one"

What needs to be changed though is having to carry a player who has legitimately been hit with a career ending injury like Pronger. In those instances, the player should come completely off the cap and their contract should no longer count against the teams 50.
