I imagine you chose "ahead" because it fits the narrative. Gaunce was one the teams best defensive forwards if you believe Corsi reflects that, we have no idea what ice time is reflected by ahead, behind, tied and close but when you put them all together he comes out on top. Generally the stats community use "close" to determine how players fare in important situations, which he was 2nd on the team. When they were "ahead" was gaunce getting lots of minutes were they up by multiple goals, were those minutes played at the end of the game, beginning etc. Even with that info we know it is a very small sample size so again if we are going to use Corsi to evaluate a players worth, you can't just look at one segment in a vacuum IMO.

I think you are interpreting the D-zone starts wrong if you think that his low number of starts compared vs his teammates indicate anything other than he was played the least of any forward other than Skille. His ratio of defensive to offensive starts is still second only to Sutter. Henrik started 173 more time than gaunce in the defensive zone....does that mean he just plays more or is the better defensive player?

I know people get tired of this subject so I will leave it here but as much as I think Don is an idiot, his assessment of 1 goal in 77 games is a stronger argument than your breakdown using Corsi and zone starts.

Zero shot pucks in the net.

I guarantee of he plays another 77 games he will increase his shot pucks in the net by infinity percent! (frank)ing guarantee that poop.

The Gaunce crisis will never be solved until ever last GD poster in here stops plugging that sorry a$$ excuse for a hockey player into possible lineups and/or defending his so called defensive "ability" - but yeah mainly it keeps the trolls out too.

lol bring it on! I will debate anyone in here on why Gaunce should NOT be on the Canucks roster because he is a plug. But again, this franchise's fans continue to grow attached to prospects that lack skill, but have good intentions, or have stutters. Gaunce is not an NHL player, why are we even talking about him lol.

Guance may not be an NHL player but he's easily top 9 stock for the canucks.

Lets keep Gaunce on the 4th line center because he provides offense..... ok wait.. Lets keep Gaunce on the 4th line center because he provides grit... no wait.. Lets keep Gaunce on the 4th line center because of his incredible shot... ok one sec... Lets keep Gaunce on the 4th line center because he creates numerous scoring chances for his line mates... ok hold my beer, lets try again... Lets keep Gaunce on the 4th line center because he is good defensively against other teams 4th liners... FFS, hold on... Lets keep Gaunce on the 4th line center because of his foot speed/skating... F*CK

Logic behind having Gaunce as the Canucks 4th line center.

If we are going to keep/sign Gaunce, send him to Utica and have him score as many goals as he did in Junior (33) and get him to match that playing with players not named Valk/Archibald/Grenier/Zalewski. Get him playing with players who can actually develop the offensive side of his game.

Not only does Gaunce not pass the stats test but he also doesn't pass the eye test. He didn't look dangerous at all last year. The shots he did generate where from the outside and never challenged the goalie. Thankfully we should have enough depth now that he work on improving his game in Utica.

Chaput is 100x more fit for the Canucks 4th line center position than Gaunce. And that is saying something lol

Corsi was used as part of the discussion because like any stat it has flaws. Just because he has more shot attempts for than against doesnt mean he was ahead in quality shot differential. It wasnt really used in a vaccum, thats why I didnt just say "hes not great defensively because of Corsi ahead", I went ahead and covered the majority of the stats that are considered a reflection of defensive play to highlight his mediocrity.

I dont think I am using zone starts wrong here. If he was a defensive all star, he would be utilized more often in that role outside normal deployment and his numbers would be inflated. How often did we throw Kesler out there with the Sedins in the D zone? It doesnt happen with Gaunce, plain and simple. He was put out with the rest of the 4th line whenever they were called upon

Agreed it can be dropped. I am not against Gaunce, I think he is better suited for 4th line than most prospects because he can become good defensively. He is a poor offensive player and isnt a liability defensively (which relative to his age/experience is normal), but the whole argument was to say he isnt great at defense, just ok

I was at the beach the other day and something happened that caused me to think about you. It was hot, and sweaty and my kid kicked some sand, in and of itself not a bad thing, but a few tiny annoying little grains found their way into the crack of my asş where they mixed with sweat and other greasy materials to form what i termed an annoyance ointment, this is where you come in, this obnoxious substance was annoying and distracting, serving no real purpose other then to distract and irritate.

Butt I just wanted to let you know I was thinking about you buddy.
