There was a brief piece in today's paper about Pen's intention to trade Kessel. I thought it was a bit amusing when I thought about that contract. He started out with $8 million from TO, now Leafs are stuck with a $1.2 mil per year stupid tax, next the Pens will trade him to Arizona and retain $1.5 say. It's the contract that keeps poisoning. And from the Kessel camp, he will pay taxes in two countries and two states.
- winsix
Spreading his salary across multiple states and countries probably eases his tax burden.

Expect Liljegrin to be in the SEL & save a contract spot.
Too young & not ready to rush into the Leafs line-up.
Needing proven top 4 D is not fixed from within.
Patience or a trade is the options available. |

No, not Jim Benning either, but the posts from Canucks fans to date seen here were for the most part starting with Nylander plus for Tanev. And the general feeling on this blog was that there wasn't a single player - anywhere in the Vancouver organization which would merit Nylander in return. I personally don't want an undrafted player that managed 10 points in a season for the Leafs. I don't care about intangibles.

All fine with me but top D don't grow on trees either.
If u think the Leafs need offense from D u won't be getting one in a trade.
U brought up Nylander not I. Your points on Tanev make no sense either.
Tell me about late picks like Zetterberg while u r at it.
Keeping the puck outta the net should be the focus. |

After Matthews Marner Reilly i'd put Nylander as 4th best on the Leafs.
If the Canucks r so destitute i can live with it while prospects develop.
When Nylander carries the team to somewhere we can chat again.
Til then u can bait me with whatever u wish.
I have no problems with patience while our rebuild takes hold. |

He will be a center. |

In general, the prices paid for middle of the road d-men like Hamonic and Larsson recently have been very high imo. Larsson was a high pick, but underperformed and still hasn't shown a great deal in the NHL. Hall on the other hand, at least offensively is a dynamic player. NJ made out like bandits. Surprisingly, Garth Snow - certainly not one of the better GM's in the league fleeced Calgary on the Hamonic trade. I understand that in a salary cap world, contract has an important role in a trade. Even if you have a great d-man, if he is paid $10 mil, not every team can fit that in, age and term can be an issue etc. The Leafs drafted Liljegren, who was much to the amazement of many still available at 17. Leafs are not ready to compete yet for the cup this year. Realistically they can aim for 100 points. They can add one or two decent d-men of the ilk of say Colin Miller or possibly Josh Manson or maybe Tyson Barrie, without moving either Nylander or Marner. This is the course for this team.

Once he becomes a true C that might be the case.
As it stands now the Leafs r pretty loaded on offence.
Get the top 4 D in place & the Leads r set to be serious contenders.

as of right now, i'm not sure. both jvr and kadri had more goals. kadri is clearly the better 2-way player.
so many good forwards, it's actually hard to rank.
thanks. you just made my day. |

What u so loosely refer to as middle of the D still ignores the fact thats what D fetches in trades. Why? Cuz there is not enough of them to go around.
Manson or Barrie prolly not going anywhere & if they do it won't be cheap.
Do u honestly think the Leafs will get either for nothing? |

Placing Nylander as 4th best is not a knock by any means.
It says how well the team has drafted & finally on a course for years of success. Kadri is a key piece IMO. |

Do u wanna continuing sparring? |

Barrie should be very cheap - he did not earn his sizeable contract last year. He is seriously overpaid was a -34 on a team that is going nowhere. Manson is a fourth d-man on an excellent team that has older forwards and needs some youth up front.

Tanev is easily a top 4 Dman in the 50 games he plays if he was healthy more often hed be a great fit for the leafs assumimg the price isnt so high. Rather pass though i think |

No sparring, just looking at stats. Nylander scored slightly lower than an excellent Canuck player in his rookie year. 61 points in 81 games, Bure scored 60 in 65 games. What is a footnote to this is that Bure scored his rookie points when there was much more scoring in the NHL. To me Tanev can be compared to a player also from Vancouver - Harold Snepts. Now ask yourself - would you trade Bure for Snepts straight up?

Cuz the AV's r in rebuild mode u cite poor reasons he will be traded for cheap.
+- on a lousy team doesn't mean players fetch nothing.
No motivation is there to give him away.
What Anaheim needs doesn't mean they move Manson cuz of depth.
Deep D depth is a strength few teams have eg Preds CBJ & the Ducks.
Prices for D r traditionally high & it will continue. |
