I think if he did a great job, we would have been sniffing a playoff spot last year, not taking a step back

his first few drafts blah
his last draft looks decent

brutal at fixing the d

honestly, it was as if he was in panic mode the last 12 months here

regarding trades

what trade did he win, ror for sure
the rest
meh

Looking back, it's the Moulson and gorges deals that are the worst for me. He should have realized we didn't need "leadership" through the tank years. I believe the only Sabres left that played with Moulson in '14 are girgs and Risto. Same with gorges. We could have given mezaros a 2 year deal to get to the cap floor instead of paying Moulson and gorges for 5 years. That, and DLOsucks

I think GMTM did a good job (I like his trades more than most), and we all liked him for his non-filter. His greatest failure, and probably should have been the easiest thing for him to fix, was his disaster in Rochester.

It was hardly even a talking point to him. He didn't sound nearly as interested in fixing them as this regime does. However, he didn't really sound interested in anything. Except beer.

Which is fine, I guess, if you're an average schmuck.

regarding trades

A lot of injuries last year

Won the ROR trade

The Kane trade - TBD, but WIN has nothing from that right now

The Faesching trade - TBD, but LA thought so highly of the Dman that got that the exposed/and lost him to LV.

Lehner trade - TBD, but Lehner's been good. Colin Whute, TBD. Hated that trade when he made it.

As bad as the Kulikov trade was, I always thought Pysyk was a 5-6 dman, and if Asplund turns out good, the tarde soesn't end up all that bad.

I get it, he was fired for a reason, and TBOT looks great so far, but, he's not as bad as a lot of the pile-onners on this board indicate. JBOTS was interviewed by Lafontaine in the first GM search and GMTM won out for whatever reason.

In retrospect, his trades weren't as bad as signing Moulsen for 5/25

Tatar rejects 5x5 for $25M. Wants 7x$6 for $42M.

He's a 50 point guy on his career. I can't see him getting that money.

I might go $5x6 for $30M

Regardless of what people think TM won/lost.

Sabres were a mess, Rochester was a mess. He didn't have answers how to fix it or why.

That is why he was fired.

That number is crazy, no way he should get that.
Also love me some VSOP Hennessy, very smooth on the rocks.

True but KO was a UFA deal always have a bit of a premium on those, I think 5mill over 6 years would be a good deal for both sides, if Tatar was a FA I think he gets that 42 mill easy, just not in the position to over ask unless he is trying to get out of Detroit.

3 years younger

asking for 6 per is not out of line

red wings giving him 6 per may be out of line

if the wings countered with years years 5.4 per, it's a win for both

I get a lot of people are mad about his tenure but I don't think GMTM sounded like he didn't care.

I think often when I heard him in interviews he'd respond to things as if he felt like certain criticisms hurt his feelings. Even if he tried to sound "tough" doing so, it shows he cared enough to respond.

Doing a bad job doesn't have to necessarily mean you don't care. Some people just aren't cut out for it and maybe he was but his plans just didn't turn out.

Honestly I feel like he started out "slow playing" the rebuild (signing Moulson and Gorges were signs of that to me) but then when E Kane came available he tried to fast-track it. IMO a sudden change to fast-tracking the rebuild doesnt' make sense after those signings. It seems like a drastic change of plans that probably wasn't accounted for and who knows why he did it (fan pressure? ownership pressure? opportunity? drunkeness? who knows?). I would say that probably led to his downfall.

This is fair.

He's a 5M player. He's also their best player. Or 2nd best if you think Zetterberg has anything left in the tank.

I think thats the easy black/white version of things. Some would have said that about Bill Belichick after his run in Cleveland too. I'm not saying that is GMTM's career arc but the point is there is a lot more to the whole thing than "HE LOST THE MCNABB TRADE SO CLEARLY HE HAS NO IDEA WHAT HE WAS DOING", even though a lot of folks want to boil it down to that.

If that was his only mistake, he'd still be here IMO.

I'm just glad we got a guy who seems at least like he's got a clear idea of what he wants to build.

I feel exactly the same way.

My point was that I think Murray cared a lot about his job, I just don't think he was good at it.

I wonder what he changed his mind about though...

I mean I can be on board with what you said I just want to know what he changed his mind on...
