Staal is making 5.7 until he's 34. Zib would take him to 31. A 5 year deal put us in a terrible spot, at 29 he'll be up for a new contract at 3-5 years. That's what I want to avoid. A 7 year deal until he's 31? Done. - nyrangers9479
Staal is 30 right now boss. Fact check. He stinks. Whats to say Zib hits 30 and stinks. Duh.
I understand the view of moving Skjei to get a top line center but don't agree with it. New York can follow the Chicago model of playing their top four d-men heavy minutes. But the Rangers can roll six D and still give Skjei the required minutes for him to develop and maximize his skills.
I see NY more likely locking up Skjei like Carolina did with Jaccob Slavin rather than dealing him.
I have not seen him play much at all. Is he a product of a terrible team? Wonder what he would look like with some quality players around him.
Most important question, is he faster than Stepan? - JRR1285
Duchene has more skill than Stepan, in all skating and offensive areas of the game. Duchene just lacks work ethic. And that's why you see his game fluctuate year to year.

Gotcha. Went looking for some highlights. Pretty exciting player at times. Reminds me of a poor mans Patrick Kane that is a Center instead.
He has the capabilities to be one of the better centers in the league. His skill set is very good. He's just lazy. - tomburton99
Gotta say, if the cost was right he could be the missing piece. Change of environment can be a huge boost. Or he could get even worse and then the Rangers would look like idiots. Probably the latter.
If the cost was prospects and high picks I think I would be on board for that. Anything involving a member of the D-core and I would go full mutiny. Unless of course somehow Staal was going there. Then I would be willing to send at least one first round pick and good prospects as well.
For Zib...2 years at $4.5 AAV ($4M the first year, $5M the second). If he continues to pan out, then extend during the last season and aim for $6M AAV on a 4 year deal.
As for Staal...gotta remember that he was one of the leagues better D-men before his eye injury. He missed nearly a full season, then got hit with a concussion (damn brotherly love). Before that, he got slappy-slapped by some Russian puss in a fight. He has never been the same since; particularly since the eye injury. Because of that, I have no idea why he was awarded the contract he has now...baffles the hemorrhoids right off my a$$.

if teams like Nashville are getting their offers turned down then I really doubt the Rangers have the pieces

Problem with a bridge deal is what if he puts up back to back 60+ point seasons and now at 26 wants 7 per at 5-6 years. He's the guy right now, no real competition for the teams #1. Very possible he breaks out and we have to pay him with term in 2 years. I say pay him now and at the minimum he's a 5 million dollar 2C.

its either a 1 year deal or long term. 2 year deal walks him straight to being a UFA and we all know how rare in season Rangers extensions are

Yeah, just reading about what has been rumored to be offered or needed in the deals and it is in fact quite steep. Understandably so. The Rangers would be looking at losing Skjei/Miller or both plus picks/prospects.

just based on an increase in opportunity and playing time, you can reasonably expect his next year to be his best, I think it would be smart to take advantage of that
