Didn't realize the Penguins drafted Phil Kessel... or the Kings drafted Gabroik, or Jeff Carter. What year did the Hawks draft Hossa, or Anisimov or Rozsival?

Which year did the Ranger's draft? Nash and McD?

Yes, drafting generational talent is a big boon for a team and a big part of their success but signing free agents (and trading) certainly helps.

When did anyone of these players sign with a lottery team.....we have to show improvement first before anybody with skill or a brain would sign here ......of course unless we overpay them drastically.

So many whiny people. This isn't nhl 17 gm mode. You cant just get every player you want and only give up a first round pick. Ray has done a good job so far, better than I expected. Rebuilds aren't an ober night deal. It'll take a while before we are legit contenders just face it.

Heck some of the trades Shero has gotten away with you wouldn't even be able to come close to on NHL 17. People need to ask themselves if they want this to be a playoff team or a consistent contender. If you're satisfied with making the playoffs and always being a first or second round exit, sure let's get spending on some big FA's. If you want this team to get back to the glory days and start winning some cups then give it a little more time. Given the right moves and maybe a little bit of luck we can be contending in a few years. For instance say we suck this year, we get a top pick and get Dahlin, then add 2 Jersey boys in Carlson and JVR. This team then starts looking pretty dangerous for the near and longterm. Unlikely? Sure. Possible? Absolutely.

agreed. the rebuild is going very well. def feel like we are on an upswing, but it is going to take time. this team is 100% more exciting than that POS line-up lou had us rolling out with.

One could hope, outside of the Mueller deal Shero has been amazing. 3 slam dunk trades so far for Hall/Johansson/Palms

Yes, Ray has done a great job on trades and replenishing the farm. I don't think I"ve ever said otherwise. But in the three years he's here our payroll has been dropping and we've brought in a bunch of defensive stiffs. And it seems like he did a half assed job of going after Shattenkirk. I think we are essentially being run as a small market team with a bullpoop payroll.

Provorov insted of Zacha, that would have been great job. The hardest position to find good D. Provorov and Larson, would have been much better then having Zacha.
Talking about wrong pick up, and it's biting us in the ass.

Yes but that year we still had Conte running the draft, Shero's people weren't in place yet. We really can't kill him if Conte had Zacha rated higher then Provorov. He had to listen to "Lou's" guys on that draft but since then he had a very good draft last year and this year as well with his guys.

I just saw this article on CBS Sports (not known for their hockey news) but it was about Ray not really receiving any offers for Kovy.

There was a quote from Shero...
I never turned down a first-round pick. I never turned down a seventh-round pick. I never turned down anything. Why? It's really simple: There was nothing to turn down.

I can't say anything bad about Ray cause as stated above, He wasn't left with much in the cupboards or starting lineup. He must really have a good report on Mueller because I really thought he was going to sign some Dman..Excited for rookie development camp here see Nico McLeod and the rest our future looks bright for once.

He was never going to get a real shot at a roster spot on the devils seemed like Hynes had something against him or didn't like his game me personally I thought he was a decent 3rd pairing guy but we already have too many of those lol
- Devils314

Why did Shero sign Auvitu if Hynes did not want him? What changed on Bennett (whom I was not impressed with but it is not the point I am trying to make) in a year, that he was worth giving up a third round choice for one year, and having the GM say he saw no role for him the next year? There seems to be a disconnect here.

People seem to be giving Shero a pass for everything, and assuming that Lou would have drafted Luke Gazdic each of the past two years in the first round. The same people who swear that we can't trade Schneider (a Lou pickup) because he is an elite goalie.

And Hall for Larsson, I am not so sure that we won that deal.

Agreed. Still seeing Rags getting Shattenkirk and him would be disappointing if it happened. With arbitration, can Ray still offer sheet Zibanejad? Just to drive up the price....

yea, you spend on free agents and make trades, but you do that after you already have a competitive franchise core in place, which is what the aforementioned Cup-winning teams did and do. Their cores were drafted, and you add and trade around that.

Interesting idea but you have to figure it could turn out either way. Could you imagine acquiring this player and then giving the Rags the first overall pick in next years draft (assuming we won the lottery again which is unlikely but with Taylor Hall's luck not impossible).
