Hayes, Holden, and as many 1st round picks as it takes (bc it's not like the NYR will make good use of one anyway) to get MacKinnon. Slide him into that 1C slot and suddenly the lineup looks scary.

Fulltilt has a write up about Kerfoot

So does Adam Herman, he knows way more about these guys than me, so I defer to him and others on the college etc. prospects. Vancouver has to be a favorite due to home town but maybe Vesey can whisper a little bit in his ear and get him to NY.

i get the argument for dealing McDonagh, which is what I highlighted in my blog. But, also don't believe he will be traded, at least not this year, even for a #1 center. Plus, as Pete and others said, there is a limit of true #1 centers. Does Duchene qualify as one for these purposes? We know the ones that do, but it's maybe what a-third to half or so of the league that has a true #1 center for discussion purposes?

Which, despite his poor-ish second half, was a steal.

Crosby Toews Kopitar Datsyuk Getzlaf Bergeron. Last 10 cup winners. Tell me who our #1 center is to put with that list.
- nyrangers9479

What do all those players have in common bud? All on the teams that drafted them.

Teams do not move #1 centers like that. Go back to playing NHL17. I love this sentiment from people like my uncle "Why can't they go out and get a #1 center"

Same reason the NY Jets can't just "go out and get a franchise QB." That is not how it works, like, at all.

I don't rule out trading McDonagh next summer, especially if it starts to look like he'll command a crazy contract

they aren't trading him right now

I just scrolled back through Stanley Cup winners. Take one (frank)ing guess which is the last team to win the cup with a #1 center they didn't draft...

Seriously for Kerfoot, besides the obvious Vancouver connect, NY would be a great landing spot, Vesey and openings at C that give him an oppurtunity to jump right in, Vancouver has Sedin, Sutter, Gagner, Granlund and Burmistrov already penciled in plus with our track history in recent years of getting college players in the lineup immediately.

Unless its the Bruins, doesn't really happen. The Bruins have done it twice. They traded both Joe Thornton and Tyler Seguin for uninspiring returns.

I guess you can find the occasional dumbass GM, who gives up on a young player to soon. But, it's hard to rely upon it.

Hell, the Rangers actually made a trade for Steve Stamkos before the Lightning hire ups vetoed it.

I'll give you that, but can we agree it's extremely rare? Same as it football with acquiring a top flight QB? It just isn't something you go out and do.

This goes back to your statement. When people say #1 center, what do they mean?

It's extremely, extremely rare, and usually requires the opposing GM to drink a few gallons of stupid juice.

The best you can hope for is to find some young player that has fallen out of favor with their club and bet on their potential.

It's also why I am so interested to see JT hit the open market... I know people say he can only make like $10M because McDavid is making $13M, but if he wants, he can command more. Acquiring a top flight center is so rare a GM would definitely pay JT more than McDavid if that was their option. Supply and demand...

I think JT can get paid the max if that is what he wants. Or, he can take a little less to play for a contender, who he doesn't want to hamstring with his salary. The NBA guys always seem to take less than what they can get to put together those super team rosters, although those guys have endorsement opportunities that aren't available (to the same financial level) to the NHL guys.

My opinion is no one trades legit number 1 centers. The only way you get them is to suck, pick at the top of the draft and develop them
