It would have a million and one trickle-down effects. I think it would turn off a lot of the fans that lived through the 90's and early 2000's. Younger fans would lose the only franchise player that they've ever known. I don't really know what the ultimate ramifications of him leaving would be, but none would be all that good.

I don't honestly believe that Bettman will move the team unless everything completely and totally fell apart, in a historically-bad way. If he's fought this hard to protect a garbage, joke-of-a-team in Arizona in place, then there is no way he lets a team with a great rivalry in a "big" market (obviously the minority team in that market) get moved. There has also never been a team that has won a Cup that has been moved, so history is on their side also. But there will be a lot of flak for the Islanders if he walks. It wouldn't be pretty.
