I think saying we are going to sign Tavares is more of a way that we just like to irritate Islander fans than really having any semblance of reality
I do believe the Islanders will trade him well before he'd reach UFA status, I do believe the team that trades for him will probably sign him before he becomes a UFA - jimbro83
Yeah, if it comes to that, Islanders could get one hell of a haul.

So you're saying the Rangers and Islanders are going to have a trade near the deadline?

Staal, Fast, and a conditional 2nd round pick in 2024 - eichiefs9
In all seriousness though, if he didn't want to re-sign with the Isles, most likely he would want to go to a contender. The contending team would not be willing to give up significant roster pieces. Most likely 1st's and high end prospects. Wouldn't that sort of put you guys back into a rebuild?i

OK but it has to be in 2023 then, that's a deep draft. Lot of high-end 12 year olds out there right now, Cpt is really excited about that draft. - eichiefs9

I think any contending team that would realistically be targeting him would be doing so with the intention of signing him long-term, not using him as a rental. They would likely have to clear some roster players out to make room for his impending contract anyway.
Ducks or Wild would be the two teams I would look to, off the top of my head on a sleepy Monday morning. Ducks could afford to do something like Vatanen, Larsson, Rakell, and two firsts/a first and two seconds. Also, both teams are in the Western Conference. I would assume there would be an even larger premium on him if Snow was going to trade him within the conference. Trading him within the Metro would probably be impossible, unless some idiot GM coughed up an obscenely bad return.

Could probably throw the Blues into the mix, too. - eichiefs9
Yeah, whatever happens its going to be real interesting. If he doesn't re-sign its going to be one hell of a trade. Probably one of the biggest in a long time.

I think Montreal would be allllllll up in this poop, they'd probably consider themselves contenders with Tavares, Weber and Price among all the others

Problem is I don't think they have even remotely close to the requisite amount of pieces to make an in-conference trade happen. I don't even think they have the pieces to make the trade happen if they magically woke up as a Western conf. team.
ARI is a team that would be a fit, but I'm not so sure they'd pay up without, at the very least, a handshake agreement from Tavares that he'd re-sign there. Too much risk for them to give up all those assets just to have him walk.

in the 1st round vs the Rangers, that young guy Lehkonen, was really good.
A package starting with him and Galchenyuk, along with a prospect, a first rounder, could start getting the Islanders interested

It could but I honestly believe they could get a better package from some of the Western Conference contenders that need a center and/or have such a good young players/prospects that they could afford to part with a few to add an elite talent.
Plus, the Islanders would only have to see their most-royal (frank)-up in years twice a season, instead of around 4 or so times.

really, any trade the Islanders make sending Tavares away is going to end up looking like the Tom Seaver trade

I think the "sum of the parts that equals the value of the player" theory has pretty much been shot to hell, so I don't anticipate that there will be a "good" return for Tavares.
The hope would have to be that the return is good enough to "spread Tavares' talent" across a few positions and make the team deeper as a whole and then hope/pray that Barzal turns into a great center. Not exactly the best recipe for success.
I'm still really confident that, even though things look like crap from the outside, he'll ultimately re-sign.

If the Isles lose Tavares, the impact on the franchise would be felt for years to come and could honestly pave the way for them to move. Who is coming to see them in Brooklyn if he is gone, despite the presence of lots of young talent?
