it wasnt the topic i brought up so...no?

Whether u answer the question or not...
if u believe there's only 1 way to build a winning team,
Then you are wrong

That's not an opinion
It's fact

NyR paid big for Lundqvist, with only decent centers
Pitt paid Crosby & Malkin
Other teams focus on defense
And on & on & on

Certainly goes both ways...
but would u want guys taking cheap shots at Jack?

I wouldn't
Regardless of whether he was dishing them out or not

and like i said in the post you quoted, its not about the way it was spent its about how much.

If we had a generational 1D and a 2D making #1 money wed be having this same conversation.

Which is what I was getting at.

Someone cheap shots Crosby, so Ryan Reaves will go fight the other teams 4th liner

i dont think the presence of some fourth line goon changes that. People are going to go after the star, thats never going to change.

i suppose the logic is that if these guys are around people are less likely to do it since they'd have to "answer to him" (although you're right its usually just fourth liner vs fourth liner).

95% of the time its just a waste of a roster spot and in this case a waste of assets too.

of course money can be spent in different ways, we chose to spend it this way and thats fine. im just saying by doing so we have to make concessions elsewhere.

- Sabresfan-365

Ok... that's fine
But there's a variety of ways to do so,
whether Kane &/or Reinhart are here or not

For example...
let's say we don't sign Kane bc we want to put it towards a 6mil defenseman instead
But can we acquire a defenseman worth paying 6mil to?

Or can we acquire a 6mil defenseman, and keep Kane...
shedding $$$ elsewhere? (Moulson, Pominville, Gorges)
Or doing things like plugging in Bailey, Baptiste & others we have coming
While shipping out Foligno, Girgensons & Larsson, etc

Do we pay Lehner 4mil-ish?
Or is there much dropoff if we went with Ullmark & Johnson?

My problem with u guys saying we can't afford Kane is that it's just not true
There's a ton of different ways we can put together the rest of the team with him, and without him

While that makes sense...
they obviously believe he was needed
And they won the last 2 Cups

And to further dispute your salary structure argument...
what did Cap guy say the backup goalie should cost?
He'd have traded Fleury I suspect
And they likely wouldn't have won the Cup again

its not kane specifically, its that to maintain any sort of long term success there cant be as much money tied up at wing because a lot of money has been tied up at centre and potentially D. It might not be kane specifically but i think hes the one who will go.

even if when we shed the salaries of guys like moulson, other guys will be due for a raise (assuming they are good).

Wasn't it Pittsburgh who just traded a 1st for a "tough" guy?

They make the playoffs every year

Even if u want to compare ONLY Cup winners
Salary structures still differentiate
That's not deniable

Name me the cup winner that has invested more in goalies and wingers than centers.

That's his point.

We already have wisely invested in centers, and have the need for another high priced D man.

So the "cuts" or the position we will need to be frugal will be at the wing position

Mob rule, group think, self-fulfilling prophecy. Whatever you want to call it. They all female dog about a borderline hit, then every hit becomes borderline, so then every borderline hit is dirty, so that every dirty hit is worthy of a lifetime ban. That's how they operate. Rutherford wouldn't STFU about it during the playoffs. Saying how many cheap shots he took and what a choir boy he is, and that he's totally justified when he does lash out.

He talked himself into spending a 1st and a solid player for a goon plain and simple.

The price certainly was
But the idea.... is it?

Edmonton has Lucic for the same reasons
But his contract blows

Leafs did something similar by overpaying Martin

There's nothing wrong with wanting to protect your star players

2 highish-end moderately priced wingers aren't going to sink the team either.

He's more than a "goon"
But what if he'd only spent a 4th...
then is it ok?

It's not the player, it's the price given up that's ridiculous

No, but I wouldn't call either Okposo or Kane top 30 wingers.

If we are talking about Kessel, or Hossa of 5 years ago, sure.

Of course we could take raises to Reinhart & resigning Kane to use the $$$ elsewhere...

IN THEORY

BUT who's to say we can acquire a defenseman worth spend 6mil on?
It's obviously not that easy, as we've seen

Also...
I could pose a theory that includes Kane & Reinhart...
AND
still adds a $6mil defenseman

You just refuse to believe it's possible
I've shown it multiple times though

No, but the current price is the current price. The majority of the previous deals are seen as good deals now, and when they're up for re-negotiation they're going to hop over the $6M mark.

There would still be ridicule, but not nearly as much. You're right, it's mostly the price. Maybe if they'd signed him in FA to a min deal it would get a "meh". It's still absurd to think he'll protect anyone.

The only thing I can't wait to see is when Crosby pulls the poop he'll still pull what the excuse will be now. It used to be "justified" because he was abused so much and no one stood up for him. Now that he's got a bodyguard he's got no excuse for the stick work/embellishment/straight up diving.
