Flyers scouts need to start finding savvy players who shoot the puck, put it in the back of the net or at least make good, on-net first shots that create rebounds. They need goals.

Lindblom, Konecny, Rubtsov, Allison, Bunnaman, Patrick and Ratcliffe all fit that description.

Hey Bill, I'm interested to get your opinion on the Noah Cates pick. He seems like an intriguing long-term project as a HS phenom who is preparing for college. From a background perspective, he's similar to a guy the Flyers may have taken last year: Riley Tufte. Do you see any similarities between the two?

I would put him and Vorobyev in more of a playmaker category, but these guys are young and it's hard to see a lot of their games so it's fair to argue for his incluison.

I thought Laberge fit in that category when he was drafted. Ashame a totally reckless elbow put him on the shelf for awhile. Hoping he is healthy and ready to go for Victoriaville this season.

NAK is another prospect who was a big goal scorer in Junior. He was buried on the Phantoms last year, but hopefully he'll get more of a chance in the top 9 and on the PP this season.

And they need to make the team and do it in the NHL. I've seen some game tape on Rubtsov and I liked what I saw.

One of them already has. Two more should make it this season.

I remember watching that CHL all-star game that he got MVP honors at and thinking what a steal he was in the second round. I remember the analysis on him being his good wrist shot, which he showed in that game. Here's to definitely hoping he plays a healthy and productive year in the Q.

Patrick looks like hes got a pretty good shot. Haven't seen enough of Lindblom but that's the word. Konecny has a bit of a nose for the net. We'll see where he tops out, but I think he's closer to a 20 goal guy than a 30 goal guy.

I like the Markov move only due to who would have to leave in order to make it work.

Yes, there are some similarities but Cates is a longer-term projection. He is playing a full year in the USHL next season and then going to Minnesota-Duluth starting in 2018-19, where he will likely need three or all four collegiate seasons. But the tools are there to be a guy who plays pro.

Actually, I wrote a feature article on Cates for the Flyers' official website. It will run during development camp.

Expiring contract, still scores double-digit goals most years, has played both ends of special teams in his career and was actually pretty good in his role last year. Flyers could find a taker.
- bmeltzer

Read has only scored double digit goals twice, 2012 and 2014. I think that ship sailed a long time ago. Still a useful player just not worth the cap hit.

Double digits means 10 or more, not 20 or more. He has done that every season but 2014-15 (when he playing through a high ankle sprain).

Someone needs their morning coffee

I'm excited for the youth movement this next year, it's finally looking like Hextall's plan is coming to fruition. I'd say he's delivered on his promises. It just takes patience and less VandeVelde.

Except that Markov can still play. Gill was at end of line, brought in as the 8th defenseman.

Agreed, despite the crown jewel being kept off the ice, this year's development camp should be very exciting. 4 straight drafts of quantity and quality. Getting tough to keep track of the embarrassment of riches.
