He's had a tough time with processing the game at a high level. Not throwing him away but relying on him to step up is limiting.

No doubt, but in most cases the waiver exempt player has to really be a clear cut above or else the vet gets the benefit of the doubt. Nature of the league. Opposite of the NFL due to the beauty of guaranteed contracts.
- Nucker101

Sure but Canucks have vet players like Biega that could clear waivers no problem this season. Watch Vegas flood the waiver wire too.

OJ is part of the competition. If he beats out Biega. You know he'll get time during the season with the injury prone D. If he's sent to junior then your options are limited to Subban and Pedan.
- Nuck4U

OJ doesn't make the team to get scratched, he makes the team to play in the top 6 every game unless injured or needs a scratch for development purposes. I know TG likes vets, but any coach who has a mandate to win will rely on them. If TG is given the same mandate as whats-his-ugly-face in Toronto, you will see more playtime to the kids. Give the guy an entire year as a wash but must get the kids ready for the future and they will play more and have long leashes.

It's only going to get worse as he gets older, his style of play at his size was always an issue. It's why I thought giving him 4 years was stupid. Never give a 4th liner a 4 year contract.

*waits for Eriksson joke*

Agreed. LE will make a good 4th liner in new NHL of balanced scoring.

JB would be selling low on Hutton imo, I think he plays better this year and puts up more points. I'm expecting the 25 he put up in rookie season and maybe even more depending on PP time. I don't think him hitting 30 points is that outlandish, and that would be a solid total for a dman on a bottom feeder team.
- Nucker101

Give OJ 8 regular season games(sit Del Zotto, he only plays 50 games a year anyways) then send him down IMO.

Having a roster spot on an injury prone D like the Canucks doesn't mean you are destined to be scratched. No one expected Stecher to play in the NHL last season. He was named best D on Canucks. Only option to find out if OJ has it is if he's kept in NHL. To do that he has to beat out a couple guys for a roster spot. He will earn it or he will go back to CHL.

I remember listening to a Comets game mid/late season and it was the first time that JV had broke out of the 12 min range. The commentators said, "I hope JV is paying attention. Green is not known to give big minutes or important roles to young players and tonight he is on pace for 17 to 18 min."...

From professionals who watched Green every game and has inside contact with him, sounds like the kids are going to have to play above and beyond to earn their ice time. This isn't a bad thing but many people believe Green is going to be all about the kids. If this is the case, he'll be coaching out of his element according to his time in Utica. Not playing the kids had been mentioned by a couple of the writers at Canucks Army as well...

Green had to change his game coming outta Jr when a high profile scorer.
He did what it took to be in the NHL a long time,
That has not changed & he won't change from that thinking either.

Injuries forced Stecher into the NHL.
Says a lot about Subban does it not?
Being named best D on our sad sack team hardly is impressive.

i feel bad for the kid who gets stuck playing with and Gaunce at some point this season
- Nucker101

Gaunce is another player that can be beat out for a spot and waived to work on his game with Comets. No spots are guaranteed or given this season.

Of anybody he has put in the work. My money is on him to make it. I like Juolevi but if he isn't ready another year down doesn't hurt.

Lots of competition this year. Me likey.

You're missing the vision. Not that he's there now. This was in response to Nucker's contract length. As time goes by him getting older he won't be misplaced to play a two way role on the 4th line on a team with balanced lines. If you saw my roster suggestion for October in this thread I had him playing with Bo. Don't get closed off on one post and see the big picture before you react like that.

You can't plan development based on the assumption that players will be injured. That is the worst idea I have heard in a long time.

"Oh hey, Del Zotto and Tanev will likely get hurt within the first 20 games, so let's have OJ sit out until they do so he can take over."

Sorry but that is why you have depth signings like Weircoth.

I agree, too early in giving up on Hutton. No one needs to go. We will probably go with 8 dmen like last year.

All 5 of the Canucks top D missed significant time with injury. They have before and they will again. Weircoch is just one depth player you need more. But the plan isn't if injury will happen.

As for development without injury you spot OJ games and sheltered minutes to learn to be a pro. On back to backs or weeks where D could use a "maintenance day". Plus practising and engaging with team is part of development as well.

If OJ earns it he could very well serve the Canucks and himself better being around for the season instead of lost to CHL since the preferred AHL is barred.

He's like Wiley Coyote playing against a full roster of Roadrunners(Anvils and fake bench doors included).

Most people up here don't have central air. 30+ weather isn't a regular thing for us up here.
