If he doesn't you get the recapture, even if he retires. It's a 35+ contract so it's not as easy as you think bro. - golfingsince

Yeah, but nothing counts against the cap when the league is inevitably locked out... |

He might be a little more competitive than you guys give him credit for. If you haven't won a cup in 2 years don't expect him to give up his opportunity to go play for a bottom feeder. - golfingsince
Big deal even if he does insist on playing for us in his last year. Might be a bit inconvenient, but they'll make it work.
You're trying too hard to make this look bad. |

I'm assuming you are being purposely dense.
If he is still good in year 3, he plays.
If he sucks, he retires.
FFS, this would have been discussed. Look at the franking contract! |

He'll play 3rd year on the 4th line. Leafs are in a great place with the cap. As much as you would like it to this will not hurt the leafs in term of cap. |

If he's retiring you trade his contract + pick/prospect to a team with no cap issue before he retires...
His 17mil will be paid.. |

If he retires, we can trade him for with a 7th round pick.
Retirement makes trading him easier. |

The recapture is still yours, that's how it works. It penalizes the team that got the cap savings. |

3rd year is a mutually-agreed detonation: the signing bonus is redonk (richest team in the league should absolutely be doing this) and a front-loaded deal means if he wants to play somewhere else, there are a lot of cap floor teams that would be more than interested.
Worst case, we eat some salary for a year.
But my guess is he retires if he feels he's not contributing anymore.
People are making this out to be David Clarkson 2.0.
If we gave this deal to Jumbo Joe with his knees?
Sure, but Marleau's an Iron Man and plays a high-tempo game that's not putting him in corners against 4th line muckers.
This isn't Iginla, who's played a physical game his entire career and is shutting down quickly; this isn't Lucic in Edmonton, not even playing the Semenko role he was paid to do (he lost his job to Maroon).

See Nipple's post.
We can trade a $6.25 million cap hit to a team like Arizona, who won't get near the ceiling.
Anything ele we can explain to you tonight?

Maybe you could have said recapture doesn't exist anymore, but you probably just found out which makes you even dumber than you pretend to be. |
