If (if) Thorton leaves, it'll probably be for a 2-year deal, maybe even a 1-year deal, but that'll be to a contender like the Caps or maybe PIT if he was ok playing behind Crosby and Malkin.

FYI Thornton has played quite a bit on LW on a line with two other centre-men Hertl and Pavelski.
The 'C' position is mainly for faceoffs; Bozak is better on faceoffs than Thornton (and Marner) but it would be a line of three C's.

The window is reality b'y. Oilers moved Eberle, RNH will be moved too. I hate the salary cap, but when you are blessed with three excellent young players it means you do some scrambling. Chicago is a good example, young players get developed as soon as they can make good money, they are shipped out. They fill holes with vets, looking to win a cup and more prospects, picks and younger players. I guess Boyle was an "old fuk" but he's not coming back, he will be replaced, I think with a veteran that can win a faceoff. This time next year, Leafs will be talking about $12 million for 8 years for Matthews and a big raise for Marner. Sucks, but its part the business now. And you don't need to fill the roster with "old fuks" one or two is ok, but you can't be signing young UFA forwards for $7 million and 7 years either unless they are alot better than what you have.

Well the Leafs did just go toe-to-toe with the first overall seed and didn't look out of place at all...and over the second half of last season were just a few points back of the Caps, the first place team...Chicago and Pitt both won shortly after drafting their marquee core players...just sayin'...the window isn't five years from now, it's now...

(Not that I think necessarily they should sign Thornton)
