The Leafs should ignore all FA forwards and concentrate on getting at least one top four dman in a trade. Once they do that get a backup tender. For a fourth line center use Hyman till the goat is back. The goat was ok last year and will get better. If they are worried go for Sheehan. I would go with:
Leivo-Matthews-Nylander
JVR-Bozak-Marner
Brown-Kadri-Komo
Martin-Hyman-Kapenin
Reilly-???
Gardner-Zaitsev
one of the Swedes or Marincin-Carrick
Anderson
???
They should also resign Pollack. |

I disagree with you. First of all Gauthier has been less than impressive so far. I would really like to see something from him, but worse than that he had a Stamkos like broken leg last year, if he's playing for the Marlies before February, I'd be surprised. Fourth line centres, Boyle for example are usually veterans that have decent faceoff numbers. Rookie centres are generally a non-starter for the fourth line, and that eliminates Rychel and Grundstrom. Marleau will have to take less money in the hopes of a cup before he retires and he will play fewer minutes, but if there's an injury or illness to a scoring forward, he can score too. - winsix
Winsix, usually I enjoy and agree with your astute hockey observations but you are off you (frank)ing rocker if you think:
A. Marleau is going to sign with a team to play the fourth line.
B. Marleau should be playing higher in the Leafs line up than the fourth line.
I get the veteran leadership stuff but he will not ruin the chemistry of Hyman, Nylander or Komarov, Brown or JVR/Kapanen, Marner.
There is no other slot on this team...unless we are losing JVR or Bozak...but a fourth line center/winger, so do you really think Marleau is going to sign a deal with a team to play with:
Martin, Marleau, Sosh????
(Actually, not a bad line but 10m a night isn't going to cut it.)
And, the Leafs aren't winning the Cup in the next 2 years....well maybe but probably not....so Marleau isn't going to want to sign here to maybe win a Cup while playing 4th line minutes. No (frank)ing way.
PS, I love you and this is just my humble opinion. |

If marleau is leaving the California area, not selecting San Jose, LA, or Anaheim? I believe that he's going to the pens! |

Yea, can't have a 3rd liner who's only good for 27 goals. Guy like that needs to be on the 4th line. |

Hyman - Matthews - Nylander
Thornton - Bozak - Marner
Brown - Kadri - Komarov
Martin - Moore - Leivo
Kapanen, Rychel
Rielly - ???
Gardiner - Zaitsev
Dermott/Hunwick - Carrick/Rosen/Borgman
Andersen
???
JVR - Soshnikov - Fehr - Marincin - Marchenko
IMO 5 above have no place on this team anymore (JVR if indeed replacement through UFA/trade).
JVR + for the Rielly d-pairing man in a trade.
Backup UFA goalie (Elliott, Nilsson, Berra, Kinkaid, McElhinney).
Maybe trade Fehr to LV for a pick.
Leafs sign Moore (1y?) bc of his faceoffs, pk, experience. Other faceoff guy is Hanzal , but surely not a guy for fourth line.
I'd really like Thornton on Leafs for 1-2 years; he is not going to reproduce his best seasons, but a 37y / 38y old Thornton still is miles better than JVR (that's nothing against JVR btw). |

Yeah, contender for sure. We're on the cusp of competing, but we're in no way a contender.
Cullen is probably retiring so there's an old man slot open in PIT. |

No to Thorton and Marleau. They're not coming here, Thorton doesn't want the attention of Toronto, wants to play in Switzerland where his wife's from, so if he's leaving the Sharks, it's going to be there, and probably not for a couple of years.
Marleau, same kind of thing; long-term Sharks, they have jobs lined up in the front office.
No to Kovalchuk too. He's going to want too much, for too long; he'd put up better numbers than JVR probably, but not by a lot. |

Underhill, thanks for your post. The point about getting a decent veteran in, is to replace the slug otherwise known as Ben Smith. Knowing that Bozak will in all likliheood be gone sooner than later, if Nylander is moved to centre, leaving Leafs with Matthews/Kadri/Nylander. The 4th spot is open, and why not put quality there? Is there a rule that the 4C has to be an AHL plug? Every player, must come to grips with his hockey mortality or shelf life at some point. Besides all of this, the level of play of a player will determine his minutes. Powerplays, penalty kills and shutdown minutes are all up to the coach depending on how a player performs.

so if it makes the team better, you add him. |

Assume he wants to come here (he doesn't, but I'll play along): you make it sound like he's going to want to play the wing all of a sudden after being an elite playmaking center in the league for the last 15 years.
Ain't happening.
